Some advices needed for A31p HDD replacement

2009-07-12, 15:15 PM

Hi everybody,

I live in France, and I am a happy owner of three Thinkpads : two IBM (A31p and T42p)  and a Lenovo T61p for home and office use.

.
I bought my A31p 2653-R5G in 2005. Sorry for some "sentimental" details, but when I had money enough to buy this A31p, it was no more manufactured. But I intended nevertheless to have one, which I thought was the ideal notebook for me. I finally found one - brand new, original package, 2 years guarantee - in Slovenia, and bought it via a german store. Rather complicated, but the transaction was perfect and the Thinkpad as described.

I had to change the german keyboard with a french one, added some 512 MB of RAM and later a second HDD. Of course I changed the OS for a french genuine Windows XP Pro SP2. And I've been using it for four years nearly every day without the "beginning of a shadow of a problem". A wonderful tool. A Thinkpad.

Now, I would like to change the 2 HDD's. An intensive use, each day, makes me think that these two HDD will not last forever.
As far as now, no problem, data loss or noise from the two 80 GB HDDs. Only to prevent a HDD failure.
Of course, the A31p 2653-R5G has an IDE/ATA interface.
The two HDD are :
- Main : Hitachi Travelstar IC25N080ATMR04-0/4200 RPM/80 GB/ATA/IDE/5V-1.0A-DC (Year : 2003)
- Second : Hitachi Travelstar HTS548080M9AT00/5400 RPM/80 GB/ATA/IDE/5V 1.0A DC (Year : 2005) in the left side bay (Ultrabay 2000)
The A31p was (and maybe still is) the only Thinkpad which can have two HDD and a CD burner mounted at the same time.
You know that IDE/ATA HDD are rather difficult to find. No 7200 RPM available, all have a SATA interface.
I would like to change the 4200 RPM main disk which is rather slow for a 5400 RPM one, and of course, increase the capacity of the two disks.

I have two choices which are both available from a french store at a reasonable price :
- Two Seagate Momentus 5400.3 - 160 Go 2"1/2 5400 RPM 8 Mo IDE, P/N ST9160821A or
- Two Western Digital Scorpio - 160 Go 2"1/2 5400 RPM 8 Mo IDE P/N WD1600BEVE

Both are sold as "bulk" models.

Do you have an opinion about them and about the "operation" ?
I don't know if there will be a limitation or a problem concerning electrical power or an incompatibility of the 2x160 GB HDD with the BIOS.
Do you think that any 2.5" HDD can be mounted in a Ultrabay 2000 cradle ?

All notices, advices, opinions or recommendations will be frienldy welcome.

Many thanks and best regards,

Jean-Louis L.

There shouldn't be any problems with power or support for 160GB. If anything power requirements have dropped for recent drives.

Make sure the drive is 9.5mm thick. There are some drives that are thicker (12mm) and may not fit.

I don't have any opinion about Seagate vs. WD. One differentiator may be the length of the warranty. IIRC WD  offers 5 years even on bulk drives. However this may vary by country.
