T41 Laptop New Hard Drive > 137 Gb

2008-08-25, 15:44 PM

I have an old T41 laptop, The original Hard drive failed.  (that's OK, all data backed up).  I installed a WD 160 GB IDE hard drive and was able to re-load Windows XP Pro.  However, I am only to set up disk to 137 GB with 23 GB as unused partition.  I have tried to clone this drive to a 250 GB drive (an extra one I have) but it will not boot from that drive when I switch it out.  Ultimately, I would like the 250 GB drive (WD 250 Scorpio) as my main drive and the 160 as a backup, but will be satisfied with the 160 GB as the primary drive.

System: ThinkPad T41, Windows XP Pro, 750 MB memory

Your machine is unable to "see" more than 137GB of the 160GB HD, an artificial limitation of MS XP SP1. You need to either run a patch available from MS, install SP2 or SP3 or simply partition the HD into two suitable sizes.

I'm happily running a 160GB HD in my T41P with XP Pro SP3 on one full-sized partition.

Regards,

James

Thanks,

I am running XP Service Pack 3.  I had to re-install windows XP SP1 and was limited to the 137 at that time.  Now, how do I re-partition the HD to 160 from 137.   Can I do it??
