T41 full restore after virus - Advice needed.

2010-10-27, 9:34 AM

Hi! New here and looking for some help/advice.

Recently, the T41 I got from a very reputable seller on a certain internet auction site earlier this year got hit by a very nasty "file infector" virus that made it past all my A/V protection and basically trashed the whole hard drive.

Having gone through all the virus elimination methods advised to me by the experts at the virus/malware removal forum I use for the rare occasions when I do get hit, and who can usually get rid of any infection, I was told that, unfortunately, the only way to be sure of getting rid of the virus was to completely reformat the drive and reinstall the O/S.

As this is a second-user machine, and it looks like it has had either a previous full reformat or a hard drive replacement, there's no restore partition on the drive. So I decided to source a set of the restore disks, and also take the opportunity to do a hard drive upgrade from 40gb to 160gb. I've now got both the new hard drive and the 7-disk set (copies, not original) and am about ready to go. Before I do this, however, I'm looking for a bit of help and advice.

First of all, in which order do I use the disks? (There's no info with them on which one to use first, etc...)

Secondly, do I need to partition and format the new drive first, or will the disks do that as part of the process?

Thirdly, I'm looking to have the new drive divided into two partitions - one of about 40gb for programs, and the rest of it for data. Is this going to cause problems, and can I set up the two partitions as part of the reinstall process or will I have to use something like Partition Magic to do it afterwards?

Fourthly, will the disks work OK with the existing (genuine IBM) Windows CoA on the machine?

And finally, it there anything else I need to be aware of, or problems I can expect, while doing the reinstall?

Thanks!

1. is anything written on these discs?

2. The recovery media will restore everything to the factory shipping state.

3. it will probably cause problems with the recovery partition, but i am not 100% sure on that.

4. The OS installed by the Recovery media will be automatically activated by a Volume License Key, the stickers on the laptop that says you have the right to use them and the OS you are using is legally licensed.

5. If the disks are made for the particular model of T41 that you have then no you wouldn't have a problem.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't have the disks in front of me (they're at home with the T41 and I'm dog-sitting for a friend a few miles away while he works away for a few days), but all that's on them is the basic description of each disk, i.e. "Rescue and Recovery Disk", "Product Recovery Disk: 1 of 5", etc. (I'm going from memory as to exactly what's written on them...). There's nothing that says "use this disk first, and then this one", and no documentation either, which is why I'm unsure as to which order they are to be used. I can tell you that it's a copy of the full set of seven disks, and the descriptions/names should match those.

As for the possible problem with the recovery partition if I divide the larger hard drive into two smaller ones, I may stick with the original drive in the machine, see if I can get the second drive adaptor for the ultrabay, and stick the larger drive in that - That's what I've done with the R32 I'm using at the moment. Of course, if someone else tells me that it's OK to do, I may give it a try.

Use the discs in this order.

1. Rescue and Recovery.

2. Product Recovery discs 1 to 5.

3. Supplemental disc

Personally I would have used Kill Disk, dBan, or another free HD eraser.  Just formating your HD isnt that efective after a virus attack.

You might want to try Xubuntu 10.04  This Linux OS. makes my old T42 fly!  Its free with tons of programs at your finger tips.

Note:  Do not load Xubuntu 10.10.  It has a few bug so I would wait awhile.

Thanks, Nylo

I'm not going to simply reformat the drive - I'm going to delete the partition, then create a new one and format that.

And if that fails, I've always got the 160gb drive I can drop in, or a spare 40gb drive I've got hanging around - Both of which I know are virus-free...

As for Linux, I've thought about it a few times, but a lot of the specialist software I use for work doesn't have a Linux equivalent, so....

Hello,

Assuming that you cold boot from an uninfected operating system (which would include the reinstallation media for the operating system) and erase the actual code in the master boot record (which I believe is done by Lenovo's reinstallation media) there should be no issue with malware remaining resident on the system.

Haven't actually got around to doing anything yet, thanks to various things getting in the way - Was hoping to do it today, but..... :smileymad:  The plan is to cold boot using the Windows disk I've got, use that to delete the existing partition, then shut down and do another cold boot with the restore disks. I don't think there's a virus around that would survive that!

You can also zero your drive using Gparted, don't think any virus can survive this either:- http://gparted.sourceforge.net/  :smileytongue:
