T43p System Hangs Freezes

2008-09-17, 17:58 PM

Hello.  I have a T43p 2668-92U that I use for many hours every day.

The problem that has developed is that the system hangs ( freezes ) pretty consistently when I pick the laptop up from the table.  If the unit is sitting on a table, the problem seems to not occur.

When it hangs, I ususally wait a few minutes, and then resort to holding down the POWER button for 30 seconds and then it shuts down and I then reboot.

When it hangs, the only keys that seem be recognized by the system are the sound and power keys (held for 30 seconds).

I opened the unit and removed the hard drive, memory, battery, keyboard/bezel and sprayed around with an air cleaner to get out some dust that was in there, and then replaced the components.  The problem still exists.

I'm hoping it is not a motherboard problem.  Any suggestions?  Thank you in advance.

I think the problem is that you pick the laptop from a corner. There are many threads on this on this forum about that and also at:

sorry to not give explicit info on this as there are so many things it could be. Flexing the mother board is a nono on older machines but when in a stable environment they work very well. I suggest transporting you laptop in a more physical secure way.

OUCH!

I frequently pick up my laptop by the corner.  I've done that with all of my TPs for years now.

So does it sound like my motherboard is the problem, and that the only way to fix this is to replace it (the motherboard)?

I'm having the same problem on my T40 and T43p: http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T_Series_Thinkpads&thread.id=17155

Lenovo is not acknowledging the problem, so if you are out of warranty like me, you are out of luck. They are chanrging  a rediculous fee for replacement system boards and I've not been able to find one on the open market.

I am waiting to hear back from the complaints dept., so we'll see if I get anywhere. This will decide if my next laptop is a Thinkpad (looking at the T400) or if these were my last Thinkpads.

Best of luck. If you get anywhere, please post.

All of the above does sound like a motherboard problem. Because of the high failure rate on T40/41/42 machines, IBM had changed the GPU soldering process on T43/p (and some late T42) machines. The problem here being that T43/p boards are much more difficult to re-ball than the previous ones, due to the change in process, which in all honesty worked very well, since they have a far lower failure ratio...

T43p board can be sourced in the open market for a fragment of the price that was previously mentioned. Feel free to PM me if you run out of all other leads.

Good luck.

Cheers,

George
