T43p stopped booting, help?

2008-09-17, 6:10 AM

After my T40 started failing, I decided to get a T43p (off my boss). This machine worked perfectly for a while until earlier today. It wouldn't resume from suspend, and no amount of messing with it has succeeded in getting it to boot. Specifically;

When I power it on, I can hear the fan spin up then slow down, it makes the normal beeps but it never actually starts. That is, the screen never gets a signal. It's not the backlight, because if it was I'd be able to see something dimly (I've had back lights go on me before). I just doesn't get a signal.

I've tried stripping the system down; removed all but one DIMM (I've got four hear and I tried different ones), I pulled the HDD, DVD, NIC and battery and still I could get nothing. I did get it to boot once, long enough to run a final backup, but when I tried to restart it I got nothing again.

I just got this thing... Please tell me I didn't just throw away $650. What happened to Thinkpad's being rock solid?!?

A desperate Madi

Sorry to bump, but I am pretty stuck and desperate. I'm really hoping I didn't cust spend a pile of money (by my standards) for a laptop that's already dead...

This sounds like GPU failure to me...although less common on T43/p than on the rest of T4x/R5x series, it does happen.

If you connect the machine to an external monitor, will it show video?

If you press the GPU itself (it's fairly easy to locate, will have a big ATi sign on it, remove the palmrest/keyboard and you'll see it), does the machine show video?

Finally, given that T43p is a pretty recent machine, isn't there any warranty left on it?

Good luck and let us know.

Cheers,

George

Re: T43p stopped booting, help?

Hi,

I pulled the keyboard and palm rest off, but I can't see the ATI GPU. I am guessing it is under the heat pipe, but I will look for the manual and see if I can locate it for sure.

As to the other questions; No, I get no video from an external monitor. The HDD is never accessed and the BIOS splash screen never appears. This remains the case after applying a light preasure to the heat pipe where, I believe, the GPU is located (bottom right area under the spacebar/upper mouse pointers).

As for the warranty, it apparently expiredon Aug. 31, 2008 (two weeks ago!). I got a tech supervisor this morning who all but said go away. I also suspected this may be related to the T4x GPU issues, but the best I got out of Lenovo was that there were no tech bulletins on this unit. After owning Thinkpads going back to my first 486, I am basically told that I am on my own now that I finally need help. I can't find the words to express just how betrayed I feel. Yes, it's a big company, I shouldn't have been so naive.

Sorry for venting, I am a little upset.

Another update...

I left it powered on while reading the hardware manual. I was trying the various Fn+... key combinations, and things like the keyboard light wouldn't respond. After a while though, the BIOS emitted a long-short-short beep and the keyboard light started working. Though no other functionality returned.

Madi

Edit: According to the manual, this is:

One long and two short beeps, and a blank or unreadable LCD.
1. System board.

2. LCD assembly.

3. DIMM.

Re: T43p stopped booting, help?

System board FRU: 42T0071. Parts wants $1,370!!

So far today:

- I've been lied to by a tech support supervisor who said there was no option for further support (a sales rep had to tell me about the complaints option).

- I was given the phone number for parts (800-263-7269) by the same tech support supervisor who... This was actually a phone sex line. It should have been 800-263-2769.

- I called parts, and had the machine tell me to look up the part number on the website and hung up. Fair enough, but the part number is not listen (try finding the FRU for the T43p 2668-GEU).

- I called parts again and was forwarded to tech support again. I told this person up front that I needed an FRU only. He gathered my info, including the serial number, informed me that the unit was out of warranty and asked me "if I agreed with that". I explained that I didn't "agree", but that I "accepted" it. He said "That's all I needed to hear" and hung up on me.

- I called parts again, explained that I was hung up on and the lady there called the tech from the new ticket. He told her that he had given me the FRU, which is again a lie. I've requested that the recording of my conversation with him be saved, we will see if it really is. She did have the FRU though, and told me of the price.

I am completely gobsmacked. Is this what Lenovo considers as business-level support?

I am still waiting on a reply to my complaint, though I've been told I may have to wait three business days. Given my experience thus far, I am not holding my breath, though I will see this through.

I was originally thinking "Heck, if it's really out of warranty, then maybe I'll get the T400 I was thinking about earlier." (I started a thread here about getting it without Windows). If this experience is what awaits me though, should anything ever go wrong? I can't say I am too eager anymore. Though I simply don't know where to turn for a laptop with comparible quality to what Thinkpads (used to be).

:(

digimer,

something doesn't seem right to me. The FRU number you posted costs €482 plus taxes in Germany - this, for me, doesn't compute to $1,370 with current exchange rates.

I have a T43p 2668-G2G, (in sig), and the MoBo has the FRU 39T0044 which costs exactly the same.

Please double check your FRU number on this site as I couldn't find it in the manuals or through searching the Lenovo site.

It doesn't seem right to me, either. As I mentioned, I tried getting the FRU from tech support, on the advice of the parts counter, because the 2668-GEU wasn't listed. I was hung up on as soon as the tech had me "agree" that the unit was out of service. I wish I had recorded it. At any rate, when I called parts again (got the same lady, she was nice and professional), she called tech support and gave me that FRU.

Perhaps it's this?:

  38L5681 39T0049 MICROASSEMBLY FRU, DOTHAN 2.133GHZ

Here is the link: [redacted]

But in case it doesn't work, it's a 2668-GEU, s/n: L3-xxxxx. Normally I wouldn't post that, but it doesn't seem to matter now.

Please don't ever post your s/n in an open forum.

Point to note; get your boss to look out the original invoice. If the system was purchased through a reseller his date of purchase / invoice from the reseller is start of the warranty.

The FRU you have pointed to is the CPU and not MoBo.

I'll look around a little more tomorrow. (Time Zones are a bummer).

edit: typo

This is the only other item it may be...

39T5191 39T0477 PLANAR ASSEMBLY FRU

I removed the URL, I guess I am slipping into the "I don't care anymore" mode, at least at this point. That said, I'll refrain from posting s/n going forward.
