Re: T43p stopped booting, help?

That is the correct FRU for a T43p system board.

If you end up running out of other solutions, feel free to PM me and we'll see what can be done.

Cheers,

George

Heh, I'm in the GTA, too. So far no luck sourcing parts, but I'll let you know what, if anything, I find. Be cool if you could, too.

@clevercassius :

No such thing as a cheap working T43/p board. These are in short supply, even for Lenovo themselves. And most of IBM T43 "refurbs" - at least in the U.S. are the ones with Intel integrated graphics...

Try replacing your fan and see where that gets you. If you have a chance to find one, I'd suggest M24 long fan from T43p...

Good luck.

My question then is this; if this is such an issue that even Lenovo is constrained, how can they not acknowledge a design flaw?

Heh, I got so fed up today I went and bought an ASUS Eee PC1000H. I had to get windows, as they didn't stock the Linux version, but I am going to install Ubuntu tomorrow and try out the Atom-specific Remix. I primarily do sysadmin and programming, so it's more than enough. I will miss the 1280x1024 should I not be able to save this machine, but unless something drastic changes in so far as Lenovo's responce to this, I will probably be done with Thinkpads. Sad end to an era.

If you are looking at an Apple, give Ubuntu a spin. It's really user friendly now and about as different from Windows and OSX is. In the end though, get what you'll be happy with. OSX is certainly a very decent OS.

Madi, who hasn't quite given up yet.

Re: T43p stopped booting, help?

Well, honestly, this was an IBM problem to begin with, Lenovo just inherited the last bits of headache that came from it...

Although it might not have been "acknowledged" as such, this problem prompted more system board replacements than any other ThinkPad series has ever seen to the best of my knowledge and worldwide. Most of these machines (T4x/R5x with ATi GPU) have come with three years warranty...and I'm aware that in some "special" cases even out-of-warranty machines have been repaired. Google around a bit and you'll come with a zillion horror-stories regarding these failures...

The issue itself is quite old, dating back to A3x series, with A31p being the most affected type of them all. Constant heating/cooling cycles tend to weaken the solder joints, along with a couple of other things, and the GPU starts detaching itself from the rest of the planar...given the beautiful, but fragile frame of T4x machines, and the fact that many people are used to picking them up by one hand, grabbing the corner while the machine is working and flexing the chassis are not helping, T40/1/2/p units were a time bomb for the most part...

T43/p machines are quite different from the rest of the bunch, and I'd tend to say that careless use is much more of a killer here than the actual GPU problem as previously described. Soldering is much better, and these ThinkPads are about ten times more reliable than the rest of T4x bunch in my not-so-limited experience. The other side of the coin is that their boards are next to impossible to re-ball once the damage has actually occured...

Good luck.

Cheers,

George
