T60 - Screen flickers then turns off

2008-11-14, 13:50 PM

I'm having a repeated issue with a T60 - the screen will flicker for an hour or two occasionally, with what looks like windows showing VERY briefly, midway down the screen and to the right. Then the screen goes black. The harddrive continues, the lights are still on, and if I have music or a game running, the sound continues. Only the screen goes out. I have to turn it off using the power button, and it restarts just fine. This happens maybe twice a day with HEAVY usage (10-12 hours a day).

Any help would be greaty appreciated!

Welcome to the forum RobynW,

Do you have that problem with Windows XP or Vista? Also, what is your graphics card?

Thank you

Thanks!

I'm running Windows XP Pro with a Intel 945.

And now that you've reminded me - I recently had to reinstall drivers on my graphics card, since it was crashing my computer, but that was a good month before the flickering started.

Re: T60 - Screen flickers then turns off

I am having a similar problem - the screen turns off, and the hard drive is still on.  I had been having minor problems with the backlight in the past few months...after the screen turned on from being 'asleep' there would be a pink hue for ~10 seconds and then it would go away.  Could that be related to this issue?

I've found that if I Hibernate, then switch back on the display is completely clear...then eventually shuts off within a few minutes. I've also noticed it makes slight squealing sound from the top right corner of the keyboard right before the screen shuts off.

Any help is much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, smithd8!

Reddish/pinkish hue is a dead giveaway for a failing backlight. If your laptop is still under warranty, send it in for a LCD replacement.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

George

Thanks for the info George. Could the backlight problem be related to the issue both RobynW and I are having...screens goes black even though the hard drive is still running?  Actually in my case, the screen goes black but there is a very faint outline of the windows on the screen...though hardly enough that I could do any work on the laptop.

Once again, thanks a lot.

Since my screen gave me trouble again this morning, I tried Smithd8's solution, and put it in standby, then woke it up again. The screen came back to life, no problem! Granted, it would be nice to NOT have this happen, but thank you so much for a fix!
