T60 Selecting text/Docking Station

2008-03-07, 13:48 PM
I have had this problem on 3 IBM T60's over the past 6 months we still haven't been able to solve the issue.

When the user is using a T60 with a docking Station (Port replicator) it randomly highlights text as though the user has clicked and dragged over the text (they haven't) and when they press the arrow right key rather than the cursor moving right and the highlighted text becoming un-highlighted it highlights the text to the right that the cursor moves over.  This problem doesn't occur when the user is using the laptop 'undocked'.  We have replaced the Docking station and installed the latest version of the BIOS.

A reboot solves the issue but the fault can re-occur at any time.

Has anyone any ideas as the user and I are at our wits end!!

Regards

Al

Hello,

Are wireless keyboards or mouses used with the docks?  If so, perhaps the receivers are picking up signals from each other.  Switching to wired keyboards and mouses would solve this problem.

Another possibility might be if the users are typing on the internal keyboards that they are brushing against the track pad and accidentally causing highlighting to be selected.

No wireless Mouse or Keyboard, user is using an external usb keyboard and mouse when using the docking station.

Anyone any other ideas, I'm thinking system board myself but not convinced that this will solve it as we swapped the system board for one of the previous ones we had and the problem re-occured a few months later.

Hello,

Does the problem still occur if the external USB keyboard and mouse are plugged directly into the T60?

Re: T60 Selecting text/Docking Station

I've experienced the same problems. For me it seems like the "shift" button is being held down. I either get the random highlight when I use my mouse. Or I see letters in all caps when I try typing. I'm still looking for a permanent solution, but I've been able to get around it a few ways. If I hit the shift key a few times, 15% of the time, it goes away. But if that doesn't work, then I either lock my computer, log off, or standby. Usually standby works the fastest, but I don't want to suspend my computer so I lock and I can usually see the symptoms go away, or I have to type my password a few times (since it won't recognize my password in caps) before I can get back in. And as the previous user said, only when I'm in my docking station, no wireless keyboard or mouse. I haven't tried plugging directly into my laptop since my keyboard is not USB. Not sure if I can test that out.

Re: T60 Selecting text/Docking Station

2010-01-07, 14:55 PM

This thread is over a year old now, but has anyone found a resolution for this issue?  I have been experiencing the "virtual shift key hold" for a long time.  Here are the details:

Machine:  T61, model 8895-AB2

BIOS Version:  LENOVO 7LETC5WW (2.25)

Configuration:

  • Docked on port replicator with legacy ports turned off in BIOS
  • Lenovo USB mouse
  • IBM PS2 Keyboard KB-7953
  • Dual screen mode - laptop open, Lenovo flat screen as monitor #2

The shift key also sticks at my home office, when I use a KVM switch, PS2 mouse and keyboard (hooked into a USB adpater), and Dell monitor.  The issue never occurs when the laptop is running stand-alone.

For those experiencing this issue, I have consistently been able to fix it by hitting the left shift key several times.  Hitting the right shift does not solve the issue for some reason, and the problem will inevitably occur again.

My thinking was that porting the laptop was having trouble porting the legacy PS2 keyboards, or that the BIOS patch to kill power to legacy ports was causing the issue; however, an earlier post mentioned using a USB keyboard.  Is anyone else still having this issue, and what type of keyboard are you using?

I have the same problem.  When docked, I cannot unshift.  If I undock, I immediately am able to type normally. This just started happening and it is 100% of the time now when docked.  I have an X61.
