T61 Adapters

2008-02-12, 15:37 PM
I have several legacy IBM Thinkpads and am considering a Lenovo T61 purchase.  Will my old power adapters fit the T61s?

Thanks, CY

Nope, sorry, they changed with the T6x series.

The adapters shipped with R6x systems will work on your T61. Just use the same size that was shipped with your T61, there are 2, 65w and 90w.

All the current *6 Thinkpad models use the same, new, 20V power supply voltage, low voltage connector and power bricks.

just... be acreful with the power rating, as Ken says, the X60/X61 are shipped with a 65W adapter... it will/may work on a T61 but it will heat up quiet a lot and may not be able to recharge the battery during the T61 operation.
The T61/R61 come with 90W power supply, just a little bigger (it will work on a X61)

So if you use regularly a 65W adapter on your T61, you may have some issue in the long run....

No.

It depends on the configuration of the ThinkPad model concerned.   There certainly are T61 configurations that come with 65W adapters.

Remember only to use the adapters with the same power and current rating.... otherwise in the long run you would have major problem with both the Laptop and adapters.... usually the power rating of the new adapaters depend on the CPU and the graphics processor in your laptop...... the new T7xxx and T5450 Core 2 duo processor use lot less power, so they usually are supplied with lower power rating adapters (65 watt).... by using high voltage and low current, all IBM laptops power supply adapters are lot smaller than other brands system... i.e. ASUS, Dell.......

Given that the wattage are sufficient, does anyone know what happens if you supply a new T61 with 16V from a legacy T4x  PSU-brick (assuming the correct adapter for the new socket is used).

I'm thinking either:

a) Nothing - it acts as there is no PSU

b) It works albeit charges the battery much slower

c) Smoke, sparks, flames and a loud "zzzzZZZZZxzxccxzcxCXC.....WHACK!.... [eternal silence] ...." :smileyhappy:

I suspect a) but hope for b).

Anyone?

since power = current x voltage, therefore to supply the same power with a lower voltage, the current must be higher.... you could significantly shorten your electrical components life in your laptop using a higher current.... if not fry it.... not recommended and just not worth the risk... you would also void your warranty....
