T61 Beeping

2009-07-08, 14:45 PM

My T61 has started beeping at me.  I did a quick search here and I came up with a solution that I fully expect will work for me just as it has worked for others (basically, reboot, go into the BIOS, turn the beeps off).  But that, to me, seems as effective as putting a piece of black tape over the "low oil" light on your car:  you won't be bothered by the warning any more but the root cause still hasn't gone away.  So here's my question:  how do I determine what caused the beeping?

You mean I should take that black tape off? It's been working so well.

There are various sources of beeps.

When you change power source you get the power beep. This can usually be disabled in BIOS.

The low battery alarm causes beeps.

You get beeps when you plug into or remove from some types of docks.

Bad things can also cause beeps: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-46018.

There are probably some others too.

Tell us a bit more about your specific beep.

Edit: Fixed my link.

You're absolutely right (and I'm quite red-faced about omitting it from my first message): what beeps?

It's a continuing series of beeps, about 1-2 seconds apart, in the same tone for each beep (unlike the two-tone "unplug/plugin a power source").

They start (but not all the time ... like right now, for example) after the machine has been running for about a half hour. The beeps will occur for an extended period of time (20-30 minutes).

It's plugged into the wall socket and the battery shows 98%; it's not connected to an external monitor; it's not running a lot of stuff (browser, word processor, project file, IM, and, um, er, Freecell).

The machine is sitting on a desktop, not in the sun, and has plenty of clearance for ventilation. The room is about 22C.

OK JLB, since we haven't had any suggestions yet, I'm going start with one. It may be connected with the battery. What happens when you run with the battery removed. Do the beeps still start?

@JaneL - well, Geo is truly a unique guy -- I'd love to job shadow him for a month (because a day or a week wouldn't even *begin* to give you a flavour of the man).

@Bananaman - that (sorry, pardon the pun) "sounds" like a very good idea. It's not beeping now so I'll wait until the next time I hear the beeps and then disconnect the battery at that time. The problem has been intermittent so if you don't see any updates from me in the next day or two that doesn't mean the problem has been solved and I've gone away ... it just means the beeping hasn't resumed. I appreciate your help and the diagnostic suggestion.
