T61, Bios Error code only on reboot...

2011-11-12, 6:19 AM

Hello all! I just purchased a T61 and everything works just fine, until I reboot it. When powering it on from completely off, there is no error and it boots into the os with no problem. When performing a reboot from the os, the LCD shuts off, and about 10 seconds later it beeps the 1 3 3 1 error code, corresponding to a DIMM or System Board error. I ran the PC Doctor utility and scanned the system board and everything else and it all passed.

Do you think it's just a bad memory module? Or do I need a new system board?

Any insight will help! Thankyou!

PS: The system board is 7663

what GPU do you have? well since you just got it, do you have the option of returning it?

The GPU I have is the nvidia G86M, I could return it, but I got it for dirt cheap and for now i can live with shutting it down and not rebooting. It's just an odd problem. I have tried updating the BIOS with the same results. Do you think it could be video ram?

It sounds like something isn't responding quickly enough. It might be the memory controller on the motherboard, but I would try a couple of things. I would clean the DIMM contacts, although I would be surprised if that fixed it. If you have 2 DIMMs in there, I would try just 1 and then just the other one. If you have a spare DIMM, try that.

Just to clarify something, the video ram and GPU are integrated parts of the system board and are not serviceable.

The reason the code says it's ram OR system board, is the work together to form the closed circuit, and it can only tell there is a problem, not which part of the circut is at fault. I'd say its far more likely the ram module is bad, or sometimes just reseating the chip can fix the problem. Use some rubbing alcohol with a lint free cloth to clean the contacts and make sure to ground yourself before opening the unit, these electronics are sensitive to static discharge.

This is just a guess, but you may have a ram mismatch (different speeds) or ram that isn't rated to run at the speed your board is trying to run it. You can buy most ram chips for these things at about $10 per GB, so you may want to purchase a DIMM if your machine has only one installed, and if there are two installed, it's unlikely both are bad, so as was already suggested, pull them one at a time until you find the bad one. If it still beeps with these changes, then I'd start to worry.

I did get a new ram module today, yep $10 for a gig of 667 DDR2, but it still has the problem. I guess I can try to clean the contacts of the ram seat, hopefully that will do it. It is still puzzling to me, everything works fine from a cold start, but fails on a reboot...

I'd try removing as much hardware as possible and see if the problem still exists, but it's pointing more towards a systemboard problem. Hopefully that's not the case.

@thericcer everything works fine from a cold start,

since you don't get it from cold start, that sounds like software is doing something with memory thats causing it. I think if it was hardware you would get the error at startup, can you restore to a point before this started

I don't really know, all I have done is update the bios, before I updated it had the problem, and after I updated it had the problem. Maybe I can to back to an earlier bios, does anyone know where to get old bios files? BTW thanks for all the replies :smileyhappy:

Updating your bios isn't going ot fix anything, since it's not the problem, additionally, it's a very bad idea to flash a bios on an unstable system, you could render your system board unusable very easily.

GMAC has an interesting theory that it's software. This is worty of exploring, but since you got the computer in this condition, undoing any recent changes that may have caused it would be difficult. I would either reformat your harddrive and reinstall windows, or repartition the drive and install windows in a separate partition. If a new/fresh installation has the same behavior, then you can be sure it's a hardware problem.

You can also try booting windows in safe-mode, this will avoid loading most drivers, then reboot and see if you get this behavior.

Also, does your computers clock keep it's setting if you power off and remove ac power and battery?
