T61 CPU/GPU 90°C during load, 70°C during idle, normal?

2008-08-24, 15:25 PM

Hi!

I have a Thinkpad T61 with the following specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 @ 2.0 Ghz

2 GB RAM (2 x 1GB) DDR2 667Mhz

nVidia Quadro NVS 140M 128 MB

120 GB 5400 RPM HDD, Windows XP Pro.

It's about 6 months old, and recently I installed a temperature monitoring program on it and noticed quite high temps on both CPU and GPU. About 90 degrees Celsius during load and about 70 degrees during idle. I've opened up the computer (palmrest + keyboard only) and use compressed air to try to blow out dust from the cooling assembly. But there was hardly any dust at all. And the temps are still the same.

Is this normal? Anybody else have these kind of temps?

Thanks in advance

get Lenovo depot to look into it for you, could be some hardware problem.

Just got off the phone with lenovo support. Now here's maybe a stupid question but, where do I check the progress on my computer later using my Case Number? I'm kinda lost on the Lenovo site.

I got my thinkpad back today. They changed the fan for me. Now, the results.

The CPU now idles around 50 and during load about 60°C, I'm happy.

But the GPU is still the same, about 70°C idling, reaching around 80°C during load.

Is this still normal? Although I just mentioned the CPU overheating to Lenovo Support, I thought the cooling system covered both...

I might just buy a cooling pad.

Yeah the GPU runs around that temperature, i am afraid there is little you can do about it, other than to get a laptop cooler.

I've been running my Thinkpad with dual monitors (laptop + external monitor) before, and now I've been running it with only the laptop monitor. I've realised that the GPU temp is now normal (idling around 60 degrees), so the reason why the GPU temp was so high before was probably because I was using 2 monitors.
