Re: T61: Fan Noise

2011-05-18, 20:22 PM

Thanks! The company we bought it from will replace the unit. They had me call the refurbisher that had supplied them with the unit. I described the sound and darkly intimated that they could step through the problem with me on the phone if they wanted. But that I wasn't all that technical. I hadn't meant this as a threat, but maybe it came across as one! The refurbisher said to tell the reseller that they will be replacing the unit. They said the fan s/ not be making a radio static noise and that they don't expect the next unit we get from them to have this problem.

Thank you for all the help. Now we'll see if in fact the next one is okay (which could just be THIS one--refurbished right this time). But they will be better at fixing the problem than we would be . . .

the fan are usually fairly reliable, so this is more than likely an one off event.

Re: T61: Fan Noise

Hi lead_org,
Thanks for the part numbers and link. I noticed you provided part numbers for the "integrated" fan rather than the "discrete" fan. Both are listed for "T" models. How did you know to share part number for the integrated option?
Also, I see from the link that these parts are "N" meaning not consumer replaceable. I've installed 3rd party CPU fans with thermal paste... should I expect any trouble replacing the fan on my T61? I also noticed some extra ("miscellaneous") parts shown on the diagram -- (f) Fan bracket, NB and (g) Fan bracket, VGA -- would you expect these to be reusable? Thanks again... looking forward to this project!

Notice that you have the intel GPU? Intel only manufactures integrated GPU for laptop.

Other parts are reusable, so you don't need to change them.

http://lenovoservicetraining.com/ion/R61_T61/index.html   follow the CPU fan assembly and disasembly video.

Re: T61: Fan Noise

2011-08-04, 10:16 AM

Judging from personal experience and the internet forums, I am not so sure that fans are generally reliable.

I had to replace the fan assemble in my T61 after 2 years, and the other day, after another two years, the fan has started to make noise again. So I am ordering a replacement from IBM in France. I would just like to know if the 42W2460 (made by Toshiba and on stock for 33 euros ) or the 44C0825 (made by Furukawa, 4 weeks lead time at 21 euros) is the more reliable one. The last one I got was a Toshiba. I assumed (falsely?) that a well-known brand and a more expensive one would be the best (haha!) but it only lasted 2 years.

Anyway, for your own good, once a fan starts to make a noise, replace it. It is only a matter of time (could be a short time) before it breaks down.

well Furukawa is a well known brand, but just not in the consumer space.

You could take the fan assembly apart clean it and reoil it with high quality sewing machine oil (so low viscosity). If that fails then get a new fan.

Furukawa and Toshiba have about the same failure rate.... i personally like Furukawa better...

Re: T61: Fan Noise

I have a T61 and this is what it sounds like now, from time to time it will quiet up, but this is most of the time... I will have to replace the fan.

audio of fan noise

It all started with a Fan Error then it all works and all of a sudden all I hear is this grinding noise. I read a post online about disassembling the fan and putting mineral oil in the middle, but I'll try both solutions.

Also posted are some pictures on what my setup looked like when I took my laptop apart. Mind you I took it apart to clean the fan and assembly, and also my warranty expired like 2 months ago.

Would you mind letting me know how I can get a exact fan? Thanks. I cannot stand the bigger noise any more. It's started since last week. Thanks a lot! -Totoro
