T61 HDD Upgrade, which one is the compatible HDD?

2009-03-16, 16:41 PM

Hi,

I have a T61 15.4" 7658 Type notebook. After looking online, I got to know that it supports 2.5" SATA HDD. Is it right?

The one I have currently is 100GB, but I want to upgrade it to ~300GB.

I was looking Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB SATA Hard Drive specifications, but I am not sure if it will fit right into the HDD slot in my notebook or do I have to buy some sort of adapter too?

I have looked at the maintenance manual to replace the HDD and it does not look complicated. Should I be careful about any special step while I am doing the replace?

Thanks,

Carla

Yes.

Your existing drive is mounted in a metal caddy. You can remove that caddy and put it on your new drive before you install it inside the T61.

Not really. It's a pretty easy procedure.

A couple of related comments.

1. I don't know what you're paying for the WD but FYI Hitachi has been selling their equivalent 7K320 drive (320GB/7200rpm) for about $50 or $60 after a $20 mail-in rebate, e.g. Newegġ

2. The upgrade process also requires that you clone the contents of your old drive onto the new drive. To do that you'll need an external USB enclosure to hold the old drive as well as software to perform the cloning operation. There are several threads on this forum that explain the procedure in great detail.

+1 on the Hitachi.  I'm using one in my T400 now and *so far* it is fast, quiet, and cool.  YMMV.  And - NewEgg is practically giving them away.

Nope. My mileage in an X61s is identical ;)
