T61 Hard drive

2010-12-11, 10:58 AM

I have a T61  Model # 6459CTO (running Windows XP professional)with a 100GB IDE hard drive. I would like to replace it with a larger  drive preferably a 500GB drive. Any suggestion to which type of drive(make or model) I can buy.

Can one replace the IDE drive with a SATA drive?

roykop, welcome to the forum,

your T61 uses SATA  discs, not IDE, so you will have no problems if you want to upgrade to a 500GB. You need to ensure that you purchase a 2.5" with 9mm height.

As far as recommendations go; I personally prefer Seagate or Hitachi, other members will certainly have other opinions.

Your 6459CTO probably has a WD Scorpio Blue HD.  Buy a 500GB WD Scorpio Black 7200rpm HD from Newegg or Amazon for less than $80,  Get an external USB SATA 2.5 inch HD enclosure for about $10,  Get Acronis cloning SW right from the WD website for free,   After installing Acronis SW on your existing drive make a bootable CD for the Acronis SW.  Remove existing HD and put it into the USB HD enclosure.  Put the new unformatted HD into the Thinkpad.  Boot the Acronis CD.  Format the NEW internal HD using Acronis SW then copy the old drive from the USB enclosure

Read the Acronis instructions before doing this and also look at other posts here and on other laptop forums to get an idea of what you will be doing.  Cloning may take an hour or so so be patient.  Use AC power not battery power.
