Thanks to Mark, Lenovo called me and sent me a box, and I have a working laptop again.  I really appreciate the effort Mark is putting in here to make sure everything gets handled, and it's really given me a lot of respect for the brand.

Does anyone know if the new motherboards are prone to the same failure, or if they are using a newer revision of the chipset?

Thanks!

The replacement motherboard should contain newer modified version of the Nvidia Chipset. But there are a few people whom have the same Nvidia GPU failure problem coming back after the replacement. You just have to use the laptop and see how it goes.

Re: T61 Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M.. garbled display problem!

I'm joining the club.

So, I've having the same problem for about a week, but didn't know what my graphic card was. I tried every suggestion I could find on the web, even messaged Mark person on this forum (didn't get a reply), and finally I downloaded the latest NVidia update and thought that finally solved the problem, but it only lasted an hour and while I was running anti-virus program (that was the sole problem running on my computer at that time), bam! It happened again - flickering / flashing screen, screen froze, had to manually shut it off, and blue screen of error message (mv4_disp).

Last night I managed to find an invoice from Lenovo back in 2008 and what do you know? It's NVIDIA QUADRO NVS 140M.

I understand some were lucky enough to have theirs fixed by Lenovo even after their warrany expired, but some of those still had the same problem even after. And the story about foreign liquid is just hard to believe... I thought Lenovo had some of the best customer service, but I guess I was wrong.

After hearing about all these, I'm VERY reluctant to even try to contact the customer service. It's frustrating because Im one of those who take very good care of their computer and do not abuse them (I don't even play games or such.. just work, web surfing) and only after 2.5 years, I had to part with my dear laptop.

So sad... I doubt I will ever buy Lenovo again though... My husband's cheap laptop (Toshiba) we bought back in 2006 is still kicking hard and perhaps Toshiba is something I should look at.

@marissa07

The nvidia gpu saga is not limited to the Lenovo Thinkpads. This GPU problem affected all Dell, Sony, Toshiba, HP laptops that used this class/series of GPU. Even desktop graphics card that used this particular GPU were affected.

I recently got "Grabled screen" problem on my R61 with NVS 140m. Reading all previous posts I think that it's death is imminent.

I live in Ukraine, Kiev. Can I get my motherboard replaced here?

Your machine only has valid warranty in USA and Taiwan, so unless you are in either of these two countries, then the answer is no.

This machine is not available in Ukraine, so the service depot won't carry the part necessary to fix this issue.

It was bought in the USA. I can send it to USA for repair if it will be repaired.

I am not sure whether the R61 is covered by the free repair even if it had the nvidia gpu. You should ask Mark_Lenovo about this.

Also, you would have to call in before 30th July to be eligible for the free repair. So you should act fast. If you get the ticket number from USA support, you got 30 days to use it.

P.S. You would need a valid US residential/business address to get this fixed, provided that your R61 is covered by this free repair. Lenovo can't send the laptop to you in Kiev.
