Re: Lenovo T61 display problem from startup

2010-08-31, 12:00 PM

and do you know, lead_org, if:

1) other, newer boards, can be used? It would be nice if one could replace the faulty board by a better one, so upgrading the hardware (by a new processor, i3, i5, etc.). Since the board is expensive, this would help decide it is worth spending that money.

2) do you know if such a board can be ordered online from Lenovo US? As I said above, in Argentina the price is ridiculously high, almost a new laptop. I will be travelling to US so I could get a replacement. If this is possible, could you help me find the correct part # ? (I can PM you with the details).

Thanks,

Hernan

New boards doesn't fit in the chassis of your laptop. So it won't work. But there are bios hack out there (or soon will be) that allows you to use a Penryn T9xxx 800mhz FSB CPU, which is about as fast as the top end i3 mobile processor.

Re: T61 6459-CTO Display Garbled

Hello,

T61 7662-CTR. Purchased March 2008.

My computer crashed and then on restart, I see black LCD but computer does start because I can hear windows starting.  When I connect to external monitor, I see the garbled display as mentioned by others here.

Is this the same GPU problem others are facing? I read in this post that Lenovo had July 31st deadline. This happened to me last week. What options do I have no? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

until Lenovo officially releases a statement what they want to do on this issue. Your options are;

1) sell the laptop as it is or for parts.

2) get a new motherboard install it yourself.

3) Pay around 200 USD and get the Thinkplus post warranty warranty, and get the laptop fixed under the new extended warranty.

Option 3 is the best course of action if you are intending to keep this laptop or wait and see what Lenovo says.

Thanks for the info lead_ord.

A few more questions about the extended warranty.

1. Is $200 the price for 1 year or 3 years since I got this laptop March 2008.

2. The laptop I bought was from the outlet store with 1 year warranty.  My impression is that the thinkplus warranty cannot be purchased for outlet items.  Is that correct? If yes, then how much would the repairs cost?

Thanks a lot for all the help.

in warranty extension can't be purchased, but post warranty warranty can be purchased. I think 200 dollars is for one year, i am not 100% sure, you should call Lenovo customer support.

Re: T61 6459-CTO Display Garbled

I have same GPU issue, but mine seems worse.

Currently my T61 7662-CTO can't boot, It stops at bios beep( 1 long 2 short beeps).

this happened after playing FIFA09.

Pls my question is

1. Can I replace my motherboard(with Nvidia NVS 140M)  with the motherboard (withINtel GMA X3100 GM965) ?

2. will 42W7866 (motherboard with intel) work for my T61 7662-CTO ?

3. where can I buy the part ?

A million thanks to lead-org and others in thr forum who has soooo helpful in going thru this crisis.

1. Yes

2. What is the format of your laptop? 14.1 inch widescreen, 15.4 inch widescreen or 14.1 inch standard aspect ratio LCD?

3. Parts are available on places like ebay, but they could be stripped from faulty machine. You can also get the parts from IBM parts or Lenovo, i am not sure which of these two organizes part in Nigeria.

4. I think you should get the extended post warranty warranty, this is a cheaper fix for your issue (or just wait for the official Lenovo response to whether they are extending the free repair or not, if they are not then you can still get the post warranty). After you got it fixed sell it and get a model with the integrated GPU. or just a T400.
