New boards doesn't fit in the chassis of your laptop. So it won't work. But there are bios hack out there (or soon will be) that allows you to use a Penryn T9xxx 800mhz FSB CPU, which is about as fast as the top end i3 mobile processor.

hello lead_org,

thanks a lot for the last and all the other replies in this thread... Let me add some specific questions (similar to blueshark's, but I own a different model). Hopefully copying all the data and part numbers I know here may help others as well.

My model is 6459-CTO; the 15.4" model, with the WSXGA+ 1680x1050 display (not the default, this is the best resolution that was available at that moment I think)... and with of course this blessed nvidia nvs 140. If I am correct, the part number of this system board + video card (all soldered, one assembly) is 42W7652. I ran out of options with Lenovo, I am going to try buying a replacement. I found this link:

(@blueshark: try the search box on the right, look for your model type, and then click the "service parts" link for your model-specific codes).

If this is correct, possible board assemblies for this model are:

  • "System board assembly, Intel GM965 with AMT": 42W7651, 42W7875
  • "System board assembly, nVIDIA NB8M-GS with AMT": 42W7652, 42W7876
  • "System board assembly, nVIDIA NB8P-GL with AMT": 42W7653, 42W7877

It would seem that there is a board with integrated intel graphics. So my questions for our guru lead_org:

1) Would the 42W7651 assembly fit in this notebook?

2) Do you know if the intel board would support the WSXGA+, 1680x1050 resolution?

Once again, thanks for your help.

Hernan

@herchu.

The board for the 15.4 inch T61 and T61p are all the same shape and dimension, so they are intercompatible with each other. So as long as this board model is for the 15.4 inch model then it would work, regardless of the GPU type used on the motherboard.

Yes the intel GPU model can support WSXGA+, some of them were shipped with this LCD resolution from the factory.

Excellent, thank you. Now it comes the task of finding and buying the part... Do you have any recommendation for buying it in USA? I am going to travel in a couple of weeks and will try to buy it during my trip.

i am not too sure where you would source the motherboard from. IBM parts do sell them, but they are quite expensive around 400 USD +, which is not really worth it. Considering that a refurb Thinkpad R400 (which is essentially a T400 with slightly thicker base) is only retailing at outlet.lenovo.com for around 400 to 500 USD.

I did find yours. I just pasted that code, clicked search, and then clicked "system service parts" in the links listed below.

Here is the parts listing, anyway: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-67911 (This is the 14.1" model). Scroll down to section 21 and I think those are the motherboard you should use (the differ from mine, so I recommend you crosscheck this).

Based on the link below

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-68229#20

It looks like there is no option to select mainboard with integrated graphic card as the replacement for my T61 6459-CTO with nVidia graphic card which is having problem...

I did not see model 6459 in section "System board assembly, Intel GM965 with AMT (Active Management Technology)"

So does it mean I only have one choice to replace my current mainboard with nVidia GPU ?
