underclocking may not prevent the problem. As the problem is even present during initial startup, when the GPU temp is fairly low, underclocking will not do much for your problem.

I had this problem a few weeks ago as well, called Lenovo support and they replaced the motherboard for me. My case first started out with a garbled display, and after a few seconds the system would also freeze (with even more weird stuff on the screen) and the audio would also start looping. Only solution was to reboot. After 1-2 days, I couldn't even get any image on the screen at all. Noticed that the freezing and garbling occured when there was intense graphic card use. I think this will happen again on this new motherboard, but at least I've got 2 years left of my warranty that came with the machine. But knowing that the system is gonna freeze/crash again at some point, when I'm working on some project on my Thinkpad, is not comforting me.

if you are going to get a replacement board using the nvidia chip, there is always the chance that this problem will crawl up again, in which case you will be up for another replacement. So you have to make the important decision between speed and reliability, as the replacement boards you get from online are usually from older T61 laptop.

Re: T61 Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M.. garbled display problem!

My T61 won't display anything anymore. I think I have the same problem as you guys, just a more severe form of it. When I hook up my laptop to an external monitor, it can display on the external screen, but my laptop graciously takes the liberty to fill the screen with vertical lines of varying colours as well. If this is a defect in the nVidia chipset, shouldn't we be covered regardless of warranty? Either way, I was massively disappointed by this occurance as I had always thought of Thinkpads as being very well-built; supposedly THE business notebook on the market. But in light of this occurance, I can't help but feel the quality has dropped significantly since my laptop was barely over 1.5 years old when it completely died out on me.

So I guess my questions now are:

1) Is there anyway Lenovo or nVidia will fix this? (Probably not, but worth asking)

2) Where can I purchase a replacement motherboard? I can just move the CPU/RAM/HDD over to the new one once I've installed it, but I'd like to know where I might obtain a new motherboard and approximately how much it would cost.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone offers.

P.S.: I considered buying a Mac to replace my fallen T61. Yes, a Mac... I HATE Macs... That's just how disappointed I am with Thinkpads right now.

Can you boot into safe mode?  I was going through the same thing.  The LCD wasn't reliable and the external monitor eventually had garbled images, even during POST.  It was just BSOD/reboot and display the memory parity error screen.

I was able to boot into safe mode, and the screen would work fine.  I figured the GPU was causing the trouble and disabled it through Device Manager.  After that, I was able to boot into normal Vista just fine. I'm using it as I type.  I don't know how long it will last though, considering that the defective chip is on the motherboard itself.

Let me know if you're able to replicate the solution.  Thanks.

File a BBB complaint. It's a faulty product to begin with and you shouldn't have to pay for the repairs.
