Re: T61 Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M.. garbled display problem!

changing the fan may or may not affect the free repair coverage, it is best that you call up and find out about whether garbled display still qualifies you for the free repair. Usually the free repair only covers your machine if it has a beeping problem.

But it is best that you call up and find out your options.

Re: TTT Invalid Quad NV MM.. Garbled display problem!

Well, it sounds like I'm having a similar problem with my T61 (7664-U). My LCD is flickering with green and most of the whites have red vertical lines running through them. The strange things is that my external monitor has no problems. I called tech support and the guy was convinced that it was the LCD and the cable that need to be replaced, but some part of me doesn't think that's right.

Yesterday, it would only do this when it heated up, but today its been that way most of the afternoon. And yes, it does do this in the BIOS screen as well. Has anyone else had this problem on just the LCD? Could it actually be the cable instead?

Welcome to the forum, codwif!

It's the graphics card. There are two separate outputs - digital for the LCD and DVI and analog for the VGA. One can work perfectly well while the other is entirely shot.

Good luck.

Cheers,

George

Ya, that's what I figured. I'm going to try to call again in a day or two when I have time, and probably message Mark and see if there is anything that can be done. If not, I guess I'll have to try to fix it some other, warmer way.

If by "warmer way" you mean in-home reflowing like people have done on T4x machines, don't even attempt it. The core issue is different, and you'll just waste the time and destroy the board in the process.

Good luck.

George

problem solved... not really :(

2010-11-07, 22:43 PM

Hello.

my story: my T61 7664, had problems with overheating for about an year. Overheating caused restarts.

Then symptoms described in this thread started to occur, finaly, two weeks ago the screen would not display anything, though the computer would run in the background. I sent it to get it fixed. I got it back after about 10 days with new motherboard and updated BIOS.

It worked well for a day but then it started to restart erratically. It can run for hours without any problem and then restarts and keeps restarting in random intervals ranging from less then a second to couple of minutes. If turned down (even only for very llittle time), it starts normally and can run for another hour...

I tried to get all updates possible, which was annoying given the frequency of restarts, but so far nothing has worked

Any ideas what might be causing these problems?

Thanks a lot.

@filipR, you should able to contact support and get the laptop repaired again.

If you are going to keep the laptop i would advise you to get the post warranty maintenance agreement (post warranty warranty) for at least a year. Just to make sure the problem with the GPU is not going to come back again.

Re: T61 Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M.. garbled display problem!

Thank you for all you guys' discussion here!

I have the same problem also. I bought my thinkpad T61_8891_CTO in US on Feb, 2008, and the display problem showed up last weekend. Just 2.5 years? **bleep**! I saw someone posted that you need to spend over $475 to fix it. I would rather buy a nicer laptop from other brand.

I just talked to my boss, he has the same problem last week with Mac, which was bought in 2008. And he got it repair for free (the original price for repairing is $1300). Check this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2377

Why lenovo (thinkpad) did not admit this fault and did something to fix it? Very disappointing about lenovo.

I will NEVER buy anything from thinkpad from now on!!!

BTW: I found a company can fix this T61 display problem in shanghai, china. No advertisement here, no link provided! They garantee 100% success, and just charge 600 yuan (less than $100). Maybe one day, I will bring it back to china for repair!

:smileysad:Very frustrating!!!! NEVER buy lenovo product!

There are a few Chinese companies i noticed that replace the faulty nvidia gpu used in the motherboard with a working non-faulty one.

Lenovo probably do something similar too.
