T61 and nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M dead GPU?! Lenovo extend warrenty or no luck

2011-08-04, 18:43 PM
My wife's laptop just stopped working the night before my conference and now I am back a week later. We exhausted every solution and that included returning to factory condition with system restore. The system restore always hang with black screen after a while so multiple tries failed same way. Now that I am back and the computer is in an even worse condition. It will not display high res mode and this is at rescue screen lots of green stripes. I think my gpu died of defective design. Just google lenovo and nvivia quardro. It seems to be gpu design flaw.

Laptop screen wont turn on and both analog and digital video look like pic below w/ or w/o dock.
has lenovo extended warrenty for this defect?

It just ran out its 3 yr warranty a few months ago. I am very tech savy but I cant fix doomed-at-design gpu yet so Help!!!

I think my GPU has failed the second time. LCD stays black, garbled display via VGA, Win 7 won't boot and the system is running very hot. :( Let's try out the on-site support in a rural part of germany ...

There is no fix other than to get a new motherboard.

You can purchase the post warranty warranty (basic depot 1 year plan costs around 150 dollars), and use the warranty to get a replacement motherboard.

Thanks. Has anyone used this option successfully? The three year warranty expired a few months back so I can still get this basic depot warranty for $150?

My T61 is now down with this issue. 3 YR Warranty just expired few days ago. I would really appreciate any help in resolving this issue.

Thanks.

if it has expired few days ago, you can still purchase a in warranty extension, which is cheaper than the post warranty version.

Thanks. I may buy warranty extension, but in this case it turned out to be a driver issue. My T61 is working fine now after installing nvidia driver again. I will report back in few days again.

Thanks again for the help.
