Tuus,  I'm hoping you can help me too.

I have a Thinkpad T61,  part number 7662CTO, purchased 07/20/07 with the Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M. The display went garbled a few times, and now is black.  It turns on but doesn't seem to boot as there is nothing visible on the display except it does look like the screen backlighting is on.  I replaced the ram and tried the power switch 10X trick.  I am reasonably sure it is my mainboard.  I have previously replaced parts on this laptop, fan and heatsink and keyboard about 2 years ago.  If I could get a reasonably priced replacement mainboard I believe I could replace it.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Why would people even want to replace their motherboard, thats like a 300-400$ repair, they can upgrade to a way better laptop for that... rofl.

First of all a motherboard like the one that's in your laptop would cost me about $150 (pre-august 2008 nvidia board), not $300-400, and some of us have T61 series with some pretty high-end parts in them, for example I have one that has a cpu chip that cost almost as much as your whole computer, and ram that cost another $150, a $200 screen, $280 ssd harddrive...   etc...   if I had a low-end base model then I might think twice about replacing the board, but even a lowend T61 is built much better then most of the dept store systems that you can buy in the $500 price range.

I agree, build quality is amazing, How much were these laptops at release, Im sorry for my ignorance, I seriously paid 365$ with the 4gb ram and SSD upgrade.. (kingston ram being 45$ @ 4gb ddr2 800, ssds are less then 100$ for 120gbs..). If I even get a full year out of this thing ill be pleased... But i understand If i spent 800 or 900 on this laptop the 150$ is a worth while investment into this thing if it ever died...

Also low end meaning cpu im guessing, Is the T7300 considered low end for this series or what?

Id like to think this ones a medium range but you seem to know this series very well, thanks in advance for your advice

A high-end T61p cost between $2000-3000 new.

I just spend more on a motherboard alone then you spent on your entire computer for one of my T61 systems. Naturally it is a rare board in comparison, but I've spent well over $1000 building this system because you can't buy one like it at any price.

$400+ from Lenovo ..... So if you want Nvidia graphics, go buy a used similar T61 or T61p off eBay for $150-$200 and just swap your hard drive.   That unit may also fail in the future but your odds are better than 70/30 that it will last you another year or two.

Better yet, just buy another newer more powerful computer for $400-$500.

This thread is getting too old and all newcomers should first spend an hour or so reading back through what has been repeated many times by now.

The problem with buying systems from ebay is that it's a trivial matter to get a failed unit to boot. I despirately needed a board for my 4:3 (non-widescreen) unit so I bought two systems from ebay hoping to get at least one good board. Both failed after 10mins of testing and when I messaged the seller whom I had previously purchased a T400 and left good feedback, I found I was blocked from contacting him...   That convinced me that he knew well they were bad. As for the failure rate, I'd say ebay systems probably do have a failure rate of 30-70%, but for a board that's never failed and never been repaired (properly or improperly), the failure rate is closer to 1%.

The obvious conclusion is that people are doing improper repairs and dumping them on ebay...    caveat emptor
