Re: T61 Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M.. garbled display problem!

2013-03-02, 17:33 PM

My display is capable of 1920x1200, but I don't remember what it was set on.  I know it was higher than my wife's E520 at 1366x768

Well guys, the wife has said I can buy an new laptop.  She is tired of me buying old ones and having to put parts in them every couple of years.  Basically, she wants me to quit using her laptop.

So I will probably be looking into a T530 or L530.

I wonder if this means I have to sell my old A22P and R40?

Thanks for your help though.

Re: T61 Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M.. garbled display problem!

2013-03-03, 14:14 PM

Hello again guys.  Upon further tinkering, I now have my T61P producing the one long and 2 short beeps.  Therefore, my laptop falls under the other forum http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T61-and-prior-T-series-ThinkPad/T61p-exhibiting-1-long-and-2-short-beep-and-black-screen/td-p/223574/page/140

Strange that it is beeping now though.  At first, there was no display and no beep, but if I removed the RAM, it would beep to let me know the RAM wasn't present.

Anyhow, if I have any other input, I will be posting on the other forum.

Kevin

The other topic is for a different graphic system with the same type of failure, both chips can fail with or without the beep codes, all the beeps mean is that the failure is complete rather then partial.

As you previously stated earler, go buy a new laptop to make your wife happy and sell the T61p for parts.

Just wondering, is there any way to tell has my T61 with Nvidia NVS 140M been fixed by Lenovo? I buyed it six months ago from computer store as used and no problems so far (just knocking the table...)

If your laptop was built in 2008/august or later and has the original board you should be free of this problem. Otherwise it seems to effect a small number of laptops randomly. If your laptop failed and was repaired by lenovo this is no assurance it won't fail again. If you have one of the effected systems the best option is to keep the cooling system in good condition and avoid unnecessary heat cycling by leaving it on and don't allow it to go in/out of standby.

There is a sticker under my laptop saying 08/05, guess it means may -08? Just replaced fan/heatsink two weeks ago and now cpu temperature is 45-50c at idle and gpu tempererature around 60-65c, hope it will last...

@spacman:

Yes, you're reading the date correctly. It is May of 2008.

Depending on how you're reading the temps this may indicate a problem. Some programs read the chips internal sensors which can very due to hotspots in the chip, but the fan control reads sensors on the board. I recommend checking the temps with thinkpadfancontrol (tpfancontrol.com). Normally on your model with a properly working cooling system and a good gpu you'll see reported gpu temps equal or lower than cpu temps. If your gpu is running hotter I would suspect poor thermal contact on your gpu cooling platform. If you used the thermal paste that comes with many heatsinks this can explain the problem as it tents to be very thick and can reduce heat transfer instead of helping. I recommend using Arctic Silver #5 simply because it works VERY well. When seating the heatsink you want enough paste so that it flows to fill in all the gaps when installed, but with as little overspread as possible. To much or to little can result in poor cooling. When you install the heatsink if you press gently and wiggle the heatsink it will assure the best contact with the chip's die. I find on a well tuned nvs140m board that the cpu will run until it reaches about 60c before the fan will kick in and the gpu will generally be 3-5 degrees cooler. The ultimate test would be to run furmark gpu stress test (hit the spacebar to turn off the fuzzy donut image as it's not needed) and set TPFC to manual mode speed 7  and observe your gpu temp. When stressed with the fan running constant I've seen healthy GPUs run anywhere from 57 to high 60s depending on the cpu vintage and efficiency of the cooling system. A failed gpu that's had repairs attempted will sometimes show temp spikes. I've seen some climb quickly over 100c degrees which indicates a serious problem. If your temp stays very steady, then you probably have a chip with some life left in it.

It's also important to note that gpu chips in laptops produced from 08/02 to 08/07 may never fail, but only the ones produced beginning in 08/08 are known to be good. Your vintage is a grey area where we know some have failed, but the failure rate suggests that there were a mixture of good/bad chips. Prior to 08/02 the failures were much more common.

Good luck

I have used Speedfan, and it reads temperature directly from chip. Just installed thinkpadfancontrol and it shows at idle CPU 54c and GPU 50c. I ran Furmark about five minutes and temperatures were about CPU 65c and GPU 60c. Feels a little safer now :)

Fan/Heatsink i installed was this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Original-CPU-cooling-FAN-for-IBM-Lenovo-thinkpad-T61-14-1-WS-42W2462-/190826772301?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c6e29774d (at least it says original from Lenovo) and thermal paste was in fact quite liquid.
