Re: T61 Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M.. garbled display problem!

Thanks for letting me know about R-series incompatibility, I was convinced that it fits!

Also thanks for your detailed explanation about GPU story (reflow/reball) and an offer for the palmrest - I wish I live in US :)

Even if you send me something with the expensive shipping price from US, most likely I'd have to pay the import tax 25% :)

Motherboard with Intel GPU would be so hard to find here, just like the board with at least 08/08 date. The only parts that are for sell for T61 series is because of the MBO (GPU) failure.

Hey Carpediem90,

I've had the same problem like you all. If you really want to make sure to get your laptop back to life in a dependable way you need to get a "good" board.

I live in Germany and ordered already a new board and recently a new display from TuuS (really a nice guy). It was worth the shipping cost and it brought my notebook back to life like it was never broken and it keeps up the good service (for 1-2 years now). I'd say the price for a good used board is really acceptable especially for the Intel GPU so you don't have to get a new complete new laptop.

Good luck.

Re: T61 Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M.. garbled display problem!

2014-02-08, 21:08 PM

Hello all,

I have read about 80% of this thread and others similars explaining the same issue... I'm surprised the amount of nvidia graphic cards problems... I'm reading these topics because I'm a T61p owner and my display, for a week, sometimes appears with vertical blue stripes and I have notice that the problem also appear in the BIOS screen. After that, I suposed a graphics card problem and I looked for information on the internet and found many similar cases...

Do not Lenovo has been responsible for these problems? I always thought I had an indestructible laptop, I have recommended Thinkpad laptops to many people. I have spent hours showing to my friends torture test videos on youtube (liquid spills and falls)...incredible laptops..., but you have to resign when an error of this type appears in your laptop after 4 or 5 years of use ...

I'm surprised that Lenovo does not have a replacement program for defective units mounted nvidia faulty chips or make a refund or discount for the purchase of a new Lenovo laptop...

My T61p is a 6458-DL3 type (1920x1200 pixels 15.4 "and nvidia quadro FX 570m ). Beside the serial number listed 08/ 03.

Today, after 6 hours of use, it has not presented any problem, but for everything I have read, this problem can happen again at any time... And the problem is growing to three beeps...

What considerations should be taken to make a change of the motherboard? How I can find the date of manufacture of my graphics card, having the code that is inscribed on the chip? Exists some "decode" table? What price can have the motherboard?

Thank you all for share your information on this forum.

Best regards

PD: sorry for my English, I'm from Spain and I'm still improving it...

EDITED:

I did not read this message Mark Lenovo, sorry. Since 2011 the repair is paid by the owner.

UPDATE Jan 4, 2010

Previously, I have advised customers to contact service for assistance with the symptoms discussed here. In an effort to maintain customer satisfaction and loyalty, Lenovo has repaired a number of systems as post warranty exceptions. Lenovo will continue the post warranty support; however, with some revisions to the extended coverage effective December 31, 2010.

Customers who experience these symptoms on qualifying models that are no more than six months beyond expiration of warranty should continue to contact support for assistance. This additional coverage ends March 31, 2011.

Coverage beyond this date is available under the terms and conditions of extended warranty or maintenance agreements. Warranty extensions may be purchased for systems that are still within the base warranty period, and post warranty maintenance agreements may be purchased to provide coverage after base and extended warranty periods have expired. Extended warranties and maintenance agreements are a great way to ensure coverage for all the major system components.

Best regards,

Mark

Hi JoseManuel,

Your system was manufactured in 2008/march, so does indeed have the problematic gpu chip. I've helped many members to get one of the August 2008 board that have the updated gpu and if you would like my help you can feel free to send me a PM with your full model, serial, date code (also product ID if different than your model) and your CPU model number (listed in bios screen if you're not sure). Do not post serial numbers in the public forum, rather send it in a private message if you're requesting my help. The most reliable solution is a board with Intel graphics, some are rare depending on the model and type of cpu, but I can usually get them. The August 2008 nVidia boards are also available from time to time but they continue to become more and more scarce since the general production ended at the end of August and very few units were produced as post production orders.

It is unfortunate that these nVidia chips are failing and causing the demise of what is otherwise one of the best build laptops of all time, but once you have a bug free board hopefully you'll get many years of use out of this laptop.

Please also understand that this problem isn't limited to only Lenovo, it's a worldwide problem effecting all brands and models with discrete nVidia graphics.

Regarding your question about investigating your board and gpu chip, there are date codes on the GPU itself, but evidence suggests that the good and bad chips were manufactured concurrently so the date alone is inconcolusive, the only way to be sure of a good chip is the laptops date of manufacture which also needs to be confirmed that it's the manufacture date, not a refurb date, that the machine still has the original motherboard, and the gpu date is consistant with other 08/08 models. In addition to this it's important to run extensive GPU stress tests on any replacement board. There is no doubt that your 08/03 (2008/march) has the problematic GPU. We have seen a decline in failures starting at about this time which is about when nVidia begun addressing the problem, but it wasn't handled as a revision or a recall, rather one of "quality control". This is probably to avoid labeling new chips as "good" and in effect declaring billions of dollars of inventory as "bad", so the updates were done secretly and rolled out slowly. In July 2008 Lenovo pulled all boards from manufacturing and replace them with the updated boards and this seems to have solved the problem, but unfortunately the production ended soon after.

TuuS, thank you so much for your quick response and for your help.

Today has not shown any symptoms after several hours of use ... but I want to be prepared and informed when the problem is accentuated ... If you do not mind, I will write you a PM to inform me the options and price. Thanks for your kindness.

Best regards.

JoseManuel, as I mentioned in my last reply I'll need your full model, serial and date code from the bottom lable. If there is a product ID number, include that too, and if you know the CPU chip model number it could be helpful. This info will need to be sent in a PM.

I read somewhere that T60 14 inch model's motherboard is compatible with T61 14 inch (T61 7665-13Q)

Should i proceed to purchase this motherboard for my dead T61
