T61: PATA, SATA I or II?

2008-02-24, 3:41 AM
Looking at the specs at http://www.pc.ibm.com/ca/thinkpad/tseries/sitelet/techspecs.html, I cannot determine the type of the (two ?) controler(s) a T61 comes with.

Could anyone help?

Thank you.

P.S.: The following HDDs are offered up North:
    80GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm
    120GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm [add $62.50]
    160GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm [add $107.50]
100GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm [add $107.50] [Lenovo recommended]
160GB HDD, 5400rpm with Disk Encryption [add $157.50]
    160GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm [add $207.50]
200GB HDD, 7200rpm with Disk Encryption [add $407.50]

The T61 as a SATA HD controller.

Serial ATA 1 (SATA150)

You can use either SATA I or SATA II in the T61.

EDIT:
Just to add some other food for thought.

All drives (perhaps except SATA II) come in different spindle speed ratings - as you see in your own post. The spindle speed (5400rpm or 7200rpm) is not to be confused with connector type (or interface type) denoted by the terms: IDE (PATA) or SATA.

The lower spindle speed indicates less power consumption (because the platters rotate more slowly), hence a cooler running drive and slower data transfer.

The higher spindle speed indicates faster throughput, slightly warmer drive temperature and slightly more power consumption (although this point could be argued by stating that since the drive access info faster, it can return to a low-power idle state sooner).

Thus both 5400rpm and 7200rpm drives are available in both IDE (PATA) and SATA (I & II) format.

As mentioned, the T61 uses the SATA controller which accepts both SATA I and SATA II.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, icantux.

What exactly is the Intel chipset used in the T61?

What about the 2nd controller?

TY

JHEM: Thank you.

Tabook ??? Where can you get the thing?

I'd be interested in adding a 2nd HDD. Is the UltraBay connected to the IDE or to a USB controller?

The link to the PSREF folder where you will find tabook and its brethren is the #1 item in the FAQ found in the Welcome & FAQs board at the top of the forum.

I finally found the IBM FTP site (ftp://ftp.Software.ibm.com/pc/pcinstitute/psref/) with all the goodies. But no index :smileysad:

Couldn't find any info about the Ultrabay: IDE or USB?

Lenovo sells a ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter. Doesn't seem to make much sense to me...

Why not? It allows you to use two hard drives in the unit at the same time. The internal connector for the adapter is an IDE type, not that it matters.

There are also PATA 2nd HD adapters available for the Ultrabay.
