T61 Ram Upgrade

2008-03-09, 18:22 PM
Hi All,
Newbie needs a little help. I recently took delivery on a T61. I want to add 2GB ram (single stick) to existing factory 1GB (single stick). I have located the online movie in the Lenovo website and it looks easy.  Does it matter what slot the new stick goes into?  Also, I was going to order the new ram from Crucial. Any input on that brand? Any compatibility issues? Thanks!

Unlike the desktop ram, the SODIMM appears to have little compatibility issue. I purchased 2gb OCZ value ram PC 5300 DDR2-667 from www.ncix.com and i am current still waiting my T61 to come. I am confident that the setup will be OK.

Make sure you have the right model, (PC-5400 or PC-5300), SODIMM slot(don't laugh, my friend once ordered a desktop ram for his M1330). Some brand(like Kingston) offers special SODIMM for various laptop brand, It costs you half more than a regular ram. If you are worrying the compatibility issue, you could consider that.

FYI: The G-Skill is Lifetime warranty also but has a Cas Latency of 4.  Sorry carbon_unit this reply seems rude I am just trying to point out the difference.

unless you going to have 64 bit OS... there is no point of getting more than 3 gig of rams.... for XP pro 32 bit 2 gig should be enough, anything more than that, is just a waste....

No, it doesn't matter.

Hello,

I have installed the CT2KIT25664AC800 4GB memory module kit from Crucial in my T61p without issue.  Something like that, or a slower PC2-5300 memory module, would work fine in you ThinkPad T61, I would imagine.

That's cool. No rudeness taken.

I've been putting Crucial RAM into the T60s and T61s here and they've worked very well.

It can be intimidating pulling off the front cover the first time but after you've done it once or twice it's easy.
