T61 Replacement System

2016-08-08, 21:31 PM

Hello all - I have a question for which there is no right answer, for the most part, yet an answer from the input received here developed...

I have a T61 beyond the end of its' useful life in my Financial Services business. Upon contacting Lenovo today, I was guided to a T420S. A machine with a 1T ssd, at that... not sure if it is worth the extra $300 over the 512t ssd, yet the overall security is a major concern, along with with being light and good battery time.

TIA for your thoughts on this and any direction for further research you can provide.

The T420 is a model that is being phased out, so I would consider the T460 line linked below.

As far as the 512GB vs 1TB drive.... 512 GB is an awful lot of room, so I would spend my money on more RAM (16GB or more) and the better WQHD vs FHD display.   Also, do not make your decision based upon the CPU alone, for as you can see below, the Core i5 and Core i7 offered on the T460's both have 2 cores, and are very similar in performance.

Core i5

Core i7

Good Luck,

JDG - thank you for your response... greatly appreciated.

I believe that a migration to T460 series is a good idea since the T420 series is being phased out! No wonder a great deal was being offered... which is fine, to be sure.

In the 'ratings' on the Lenovo website, rates T460 series as average, I see the T560 is below average as well. The reason I like the T560 is the touch screen (not necessary but nice). Can the T460 series be outfitted with touch screen?

Sevreal of the comments, poor raters, were about the keyboard, the keyboard does not appear to have changed from what I have, unless I Am not viewing the photos correctly. I find it just fine, if it has not changed.

I decided to go with an I7 unit unless there is a compelling argument for the I5? I tend to keep my units for up to eight (8) years or so before ditching. My repairs have been minimal and I usually try to make upgrades after a few years for improvement in operation.

Thank you again for your time and all input is greatly appreciated.

One additional question to everyone, based on what I have read so far on the T460 forum, there appears to be battery challenges. A vocal few or something to really worry about?

I do know that my T61 does not have good battery life, as I have changed it four (4) times over its' life, so far.

TIA - bo1953

Are you aware you can easily modify your T61 to double the SATA transfer speed?  and also run dual IDA mode to run the cpu at 110%. This, perhaps a faster cpu, 8gb of ram and an SSD drive and you may not want to dump your T61 as they are built much better than the newer models IMO.
