Re: T61 Support SATA II ?

@Mark c.o. Lenovo

I am a T61 7663 User and tried last week the Intel X25 SSD ( E & M ). It is really sad, that the SATA Interface slows down the drives soo much ( almost half speed of what is possible / ~120 mbit ).

The saddest thing is, that my neightbour brought at the same time as me a cheap discount notebook, for half of the price of what i spend on my T61, and the discount notebook runs full speed with the same SSD ( ~ 240 mbit ) :-( , same chipset.

Please Lenovo ( Mark ) try to find a solution for this technical issue.

Ingo, Germany

Re: T61 Support SATA II ?

@xaviler the primary reason why the T61 had a SATAI and not a SATAII interface, is the fact that it uses a PATA interface Ultrabay Slot, in the SATAII mode the PATA ultrabay devices may not properly run. Your friend's cheap laptop don't have ultrabay.

This is one of the reason why the newer T4xx/5xx, R5xx, W5xx/7xx use the new serial ultrabay devices, which have SATA interface rather than a PATA interface.

I think we've to wait for the new coming models designed for Windows Seven...I hope

I am not sure if this is completely true.

T61 bay support both interface. PATA and SATA. You can see 2 connector there.

Your understanding of "SATA II" is lacking... SATA 1.5 and SATA 3 devices are intercompatible.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA

I believe the T61 uses this SATA controller: Intel Corporation 82801HBM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) SATA AHCI Controller (rev 03)

That controler supports SATA II transfers at 3gbps:  http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/CS-022304.htm

Edit:  Wow, sorry for replying late and too a conversation that's gone on for way too many pages.

my understanding of "SATA II" is not lacking.   it sounds like you've misinterpreted my comment.   i wasn't intending to say that SATA II is limited to 1.5Gbps but that the T61 is limited to 1.5Gbps.   if you re-read my comment, you'll understand this. ;)

the second connector you're seeing in there is for the ultrabay battery.   the T61's ultrabay device socket uses a PATA interface.

The connector you see in the middle of the T60/61 bay is for the serial/parallel adapter.
