Re: T61 Support SATA II ?

2009-04-24, 22:00 PM

This is SO disappointing!

Why did I cash out $1500 for my T61 for? So that someone could simply go and basically say "hey, sorry you understood me wrong, that SATA 3.0Gbps interface I was advertising is actually capped at 1.5Gbps because it was causing us problems in 3.0Gbps mode but hey, when we sold you your laptop you got an HDD that couldn't utilize even 1.5Gbps so we delivered as promised, OK?"

What's even better, the "culprit" is supposed to be the UltraBay that's on a separate branch, and they are saying that the problem is not fixable by BIOS only, like they actually tempered with the chip itself.

To me this is a clear example of someone cutting corners in the engineering department, and refusing to fix the issue later on.

Disappointing!

T61 supports only PATA, those SATA hdd caddy have a built in SATA to PATA converter chip. To allow SATA HDD to be used in the ultrabay with a PATA interface.

Please look carefully again by removing the DVD drive. Left handside is the PATA connector, Center is the SATA connector and right handside has a power connector in case you use the 2nd battery at this slot.

I have both PATA and SATA bay for my T61. The connector is at different place. Both work with T61 without problem.

No, the SATA carry has no chip in it. T61 has 2 different connector. One PATA (mainly for DVD writer) and on SATA. However, I have tested and PATA carry bay with harddisk do work.

Try this if you have both SATA and PAAT carry bay. (WinXP)

1. Mount DVD driver first, drive assign is Drive D (example)

2. Undock and mount SATA carry bay with drive -< drive assignment is E

3. Undock again and mount PATA carry bay, you will find drive assignment is D

Have a read. If you think this is still SATA, then i don't know what to say.

So do you have both SATA and PATA hdd caddy to compare the rear end connector? Your T61 must be experimental version that no one has.

linked below is a photo of the two ultrabay HDD adapters for the T61 in PATA and SATA flavors.   you'll see that the ultrabay connectors are identical.

these are official adapters from IBM and lenovo respectively.   these are my personal adapters and i use them quite often with my X61s.   they've also been used in various T60 and T61 models.

as andyP said above, the center connector in the T60/T61 ultrabay is for the serial/parallel adapter.   this is not a SATA adapter socket.

if there is still any confusion about the ultrabay adapters or the connectors, i can take more pics.   just say the word. ;)
