Re: T61 Support SATA II ?

2009-04-26, 4:38 AM

Yes, It seem many have move away from our original topic that T61 (and many Lenovo model) that has SATA II Intel chipset support but only runs at 1.5 SATA1 speed.

I gotten reply from Lenovo statement is this was turn off by their design to save battery power. (and they send to me full Intel chipset spec about registry to have the option turn off).

What we are looking here is for SATAII to turn back on so that we can at least make use of the SATAII speed with using SATAII disk or SSD disk.

The topic then "brach" into the following:

1. SATAII disk do not fully make use of 3.0 speed due disk rotation etc.. - I think this is a side issue and application dependant

If you write and then read back small block of data. SATAII do help very much.

2. Drive bay PATA covertion to SATA - sorry, I mistaken the connector position. However, I do not think this is the main reason

for full SATAII speed support. (as in Lenovo reply to my email address).

In nett. Most range of Lenovo notebook specification at SATA II support really means it run SATAII compatible speed. They do not really support full 3.0 transfer speed.

All I can say is at next choice of your notebook PC. Be more carefull and run whatever program to check if it really the PC your want before pay up for it.

So, if this is true (that heating issues were the only reason for turning it off, and that we would need a simple BIOS update to re-enable SATA 3.0), could we expect a BIOS update coming shortly?

Yes, this is true. However, Lenovo reply is no plan to have this enable.

They send to me a file call, I believe this file can be download from Intel website. Table 34 has some information on it.

 Intel® I/O Controller Hub 8 (ICH8)

Family.

Re: T61 Support SATA II ?

Well I was reading this tread  is very long one, I guess I lost more time in reding it than what I could win with the sata 2 difference,

Anyway I like to have one of those new SSD,

I read that vertex has some issues with t61p are they alredy fix?

Also considering the ddr2 ram may is time to change the laptop, are two things that looks like bringing much better performance.

It's a petty because I bought this t61p last year thinking in keep it for very long time. In fact is very unconfortable to change the computer so soon I get use to a machine.

This days the update center should be updated, I hope it fixes some of all these.

What the fck man. It's been months since this thread started. New post alert emails stopped comming so I thought everyone was waiting patiently. I had to search for 'sata speed cap' to find out that complaining was ongoing, and no official statements has been made yet. Lenovo, please make a statement so users will not just wait on hope. This really sucks. I am so pissed at lenovo. If lenovo don't make an official statement, I will never ever ever buy a lenovo again. (unless they offer very deep 50% discounts, like when x61tablets costed $650 two months ago)

The SATA1 mode is here to stay since the new X, T, W, R series are released with SATA2 mode enabled. Also remember this forum is a user to user site, it is not an official company and customer interaction forum. The employees whom do visit this site, are only doing so at their own time, to help out certain issues (i.e. warranty or repair issues).

Are you a Lenovo employee, how do you know if Lenovo will or will not be re-enabling SATA300 in older ThinkPads?

Whole this thing "we sold you the capable but crippled hardware, if you want the real thing buy the new model" sounds more like Apple than Lenovo.

All we want is for Lenovo to acknowledge that there are users who want their hardware to behave as specified/sold, nothing else.

Even the new TPs are SATA 150 !                                                                                                                                                         I'm waiting for the new models coming with Windows Seven before switching for a HP 8530w (with a trackpoint)

Well the SATA2 mode was deliberately switched off by Lenovo to minimise problems, so in order to enable it to gain some speed for a small minority of users whom want to use the new Intel SSD, they would have cause more problems for the rest of the users, whom don't need the SATA2 mode. I guess logic prevails.

Re: T61 Support SATA II ?

I think I have reply this. Lenovo has reply email to me that only reason to take SATAII speed off is to save battery power.

This is not hard to understand I guess.

But hard for me to understand is it seem many Lenovo models have this turned off.

Also, user do have a option to run the notebook with AC adapter!

BTW, I believe this forum is setup by Lenovo? If we do not get a official reply from Lenovo reply here. then what is the use of this forum ? For Lenovo to learn how to fix their product problem? (by getting tips from other and not their engineering department?)
