BTW, I believe this forum is setup by Lenovo? If we do not get a official reply from Lenovo reply here. then what is the use of this forum ? For Lenovo to learn how to fix their product problem? (by getting tips from other and not their engineering department?)

While there are a few Lenovo employees roaming around in here helping out on a volunteer basis, this is not an official, staffed support channel. Instead, this is designed to be a user-to-user support and discussion forum. There is no guarantee that anyone will get an answer directly from one of the Lenovo employees as there are way more of us than them and all of them, even Mark, have full-time jobs doing other things.

Re: T61 Support SATA II ?

Well the SATA2 mode was deliberately switched off by Lenovo to minimise problems, so in order to enable it to gain some speed for a small minority of users whom want to use the new Intel SSD, they would have cause more problems for the rest of the users, whom don't need the SATA2 mode. I guess logic prevails.

It's not just Intel SSDs anymore. Comparable new drives are popping up one after the other, some are even faster than the Intel in some aspects. Prices are also dropping quickly. More and more people are gonna run into this limitation and become annoyed. Personally I find this rather disappointing, and I'll be more careful the next time I consider Lenovo.

And just like having enough drives on the market to justify turning SATA300 back on is not enough, Lenovo is making unclear and contradictory statements regarding the reason for downgrading SATA to SATA150 (incompatibility of the bay, heating, battery life).

My view is that someone from the engineering messed this up, and is now keeping low and silent hoping that we would all wait until we buy a new ThinkPad model.

By the way, how should I know which of the latest ThinkPad models actually support SATA300? As far as I am concerned, this one that I bought a year ago also supports SATA300, except that Lenovo downgraded it to SATA150 without telling me. Who will guarantee that SATA300 on a new model works as expected?

Again, extremely disappointing.

Hasn't the T61 been discontinued? I doubt Lenovo is going to make these kind of changes to a discontinued model.

If you want cutting edge performance with cutting edge equipment like SSD drives it is time to purchase an up to date Thinkpad.

You can beat this dead horse all you want but the fact there have been no changes to this date indicate there is probably no fix in the future.

(This is strictly my opinion and I have no inside information on this issue.)

Re: T61 Support SATA II ?

T61 has been discontinued, but only recently (my T61 is only 8 months old). I'm still seeing software updates which means the support has not been discontinued, and I really don't see any reason why they wouldn't come up with a new BIOS having a menu option to enable/disable SATA300. Don't bring up the "bay adapter issue" because obviously that wasn't a consistent explanation, since we heard battery life and heating as reasons.

What bothers me is that there is obviously no way to tell Lenovo directly about the issue, only this "community" forum which no Lenovo employee officially reads. No wonder you think this is a beating of a dead horse.

By the way, from your signature I see that you have a T400. Does your model have SATA300 enabled?

T61 have been discontinued for a while, but there are left over stocks that were sold sometimes after the full production stopped.

...you have a T400. Does your model have SATA300 enabled?

There's no Lenovo models with SATA 300 even the W700 equipped with RAID 0 !!?

I'm afraid we've to wait for the Windows Seven new models.

@amastilovic:

You're assuming that the SATA II issue can be fixed through a BIOS update. I would very much tend to doubt that, given everything that was posted in this thread, it looks like the hardware itself is not enabled to work at the desired speed.

I'm certain that Lenovo is well aware of this issue (and yes, there are a few Lenovo employees here who do read the posts and respond to them, although this is a peer-to-peer support channel) but my personal opinion is that it won't get resolved to your satisfaction.

It is the huge experience (my opinion only) that carbon_unit has when it comes to ThinkPads that prompted him to say that a dead horse is being beaten here. There are many updates/changes/fixes that were requested regarding ThinkPads even in the IBM days, and none of them got addressed the way customers had expected at the time. 2010 error, anyone?

I can't say anything about T400 since I haven't tested one for an extended period of time, but W500 that I'm typing this on has the ability to run at SATA II speeds, at least in the main bay - can't claim anything for the ultrabay since I haven't tested it.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

George

Guess you have not read thru the previous post. Lenovo has reply to me with Intel Chipset spec. It is indeed disable via BIOS to Chipset register !
