T61/Vista Error 2102 during start up

2008-04-16, 18:51 PM
I just bought a T61 with Vista Home. When it starts, it takes 2 min to pass the page "Thinkpad - interrupt the normal start, pressing the blue ThinkVantge". After refreshing, the screen turns black with the message as follow:

"Error 2102 HDD1 (Hard disk drive in Ultrabay) initialization error
Press Escape to continue"

Once I press the "Escape", it looks like the real Vista start up kicks in.

By the way, my T61 was not on any docking station.

I tried firmware update. It did not help.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Re: T61/Vista Error 2102 during start up

Hey Melanie did you find a solution to this problem? I am having the same issue, the weird thing is that on my first try, I was able to access the hard drive in the ultrabay, windows even installed the device driver for the hard drive.  Now when I reboot with the ultrabay adapter installed, I got the same error as you had, when I insert the ultrabay adapter when windows is already running (hot swap), it does not detect the hard drive.  I am using a hitachi 80GB SATA hard drive.  Can anyone help me with this?

I have a T61 and using windows vista business.

Thanks in advance guys!

T60/ T61 Error 2102 hard drive not adequately recognized

2010-01-21, 20:03 PM

FYI - have a similar problem - both with Hitachi 5K500 ( 500GB 5400) - in the UltraBay of either

1- my T61 (same as above)

2 - my T60 ( ATI x1400 )

The Initial Thinkpad screen hangs, but *if* I hit the ThinkVantage Blue Button immediately on startup, the laptops go and boot into Windows (XP in this case). Note, they do NOT go into the menu choice to boot to BIOS, select boot device etc. This means that it's probably a timing error .. hopefully someone in Lenovo Tech has an answer.

[edit]  Update - here's the answer from their tech support:

This indeed has to do with some return/ action codes that Thinkpads use and that may or may not work with any given hard drive (not so surprising considering all the bells and whistles the Thinkpad implement).

For some drives you can try and update their firmware, see Lenovo's item MIGR-63685. You download an iso file, create a bootable CD and this will start the process.

In my case, the drive was not recognized in their list. Duh. Will have to live with it. In the future, I guess it's simpler to get my drives from Lenovo directly so no headaches. Their prices are reasonable.
