T61, did middleton biosupgrade, reload XP-> wireless missing

2019-08-07, 0:48 AM

Did the middleton bios upgrade on my T61, then  installed a new 240Gb SSD, and reloaded the windows XP operating system.

Boots and runs a lot faster....BUT....

Problem -> can't get the wireless working.

Doing the my computer>properties>device manager - the network devices only show 1384 net adapter

Other devices show Unknown device "ACPI\IBM0068\5&2890D699&0

Any help and advice is appreciated

You probably just need to download a driver for your wireless card etc.

Thinkpad T61 Drivers page

https://thinkpads.com/support/Thinkpad-Drivers/download.lenovo.com/lenovo/content/ddfm/T61.html

I believe that installing the ThinkPad/Lenovo Power Management Driver will fix yoru ACPI\IBM0068\5&2890D699&0 driver issue.

Best of luck,

Update-

I installed that power management driver as suggested.

After reboot, the wireless still is not working nor is it seen.

Device Manager still shows :

network adapters -> 1394 Net Adapter

other devices -> now the "unknown device" is gone. The "network controller" shows :

device type : Other devices

Manufacturer: Unknown

Location: PCI Slot 1 (PCI bus 3, device 0, function 0)

Device status: The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)

OTHER observations:

pressing the "fn" key and the "f5" key simultaneously -> no response.

front wireless switch is pushed to the right, so that it shows "green" on the left side of the switch ( I assume this means the wireless switch is "on")

Did you also download and install the wireless LAN driver from the website too?

That site has all the drivers needed for your T61, including Wireless drivers, but there was more than one, so try them all until one installs and works

I donloaded and installed the wireless driver :

Intel Wireless LAN (abgn, abg, bg) for Windows XP - ThinkPad

Version

: 13.04.0000

Now I show wireless connectivity, but can not connect to any websites in Internet Explorer.

Running the Internet Explorer TOOLS > Diagnose Connection problems

result :

Windows cannot connect to the Internet using HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP. This is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer.

Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21)

How do I check these settings ?

Checking the basics... You didn't move the hardware switch to the "off" position, right? ;-)

You can access the Windows Firewall's settings, assuming you have Windows XP Service Pack 3 installed, via the Control Panel, but by default those ports would be open, so I doubt that is your problem.

The first thing I would do would be to updates all the drivers available on T61 drivers page I posted earlier (especially chipset drivers etc, and see if that resolves the issue.

Please note, however, that Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft, so in addition to it not receiving post SP3 security hotfixes via Windows Update, most web browsers like Chrome and Firefox will not even install on XP the last time I checked, so even going online is a risky proposition.

I have Windows 7 running on my T61, but Windows 7 is nearing its end of life too, so I will have to decide if it is worth the pain of trying to upgrade it OS to Windows 8.1 or 10, or finally send the old girl out to pasture.

Best of luck,
