T61 - dying Intel GPU?

2015-05-24, 15:46 PM

Hello all,

this is probably my last chance to understand what's happening to my beloved T61. Here the specs:

14.1" model - 1440x900px

2.4 GHz T7700, undervolted with RightMark CPU Clock Utility

5 Gb Ram

250 Gb SSD (Middleton BIOS) + 250 Gb HDD in superbay

Intel 965 chipset

Intel X3100 graphics chip

Win 7 64bit

Bought used in 2011 and almost completely refurbished it. I think it's from 2007 or so.

Plus, LOADS of love

So, the problem I'm experiencing with the display can be seen in the attached pictures. The problem is not constant but comes and goes, (but now it's like this almost all the time), apparently in a random way, although once I noted that it is more likely to appear when there is a lot of white on the screen.

It looks like pixels of a certain colour are turning red, for example, if I watch a movie, the black bars are all red. It's for sure not a screen problem, but graphics artefacts. I know what a tinted flourescent tube looks like as I have already replaced the screen on this laptop.

The analogue VGA out works correctly.

Installed different versions of the driver several times. In the beginning this seemed to solve the problem, but now that doesn't help anymore.

Is the GPU about to die? if that happens, will I be able to still use the VGA out or will I have to replace the motherboard?

Thanks for helping out!

Please don't get all excited because you see you've finally gotten an answer; or more correctly a response.

If I knew what the issue was I would surely tell you....but you would think that within a month....SOMEONE would have an idea of the problem/issue/possible fix.....but NO!

None of the intelligensia have proffered any response. I hope you get some action...and a fix !!

First, bad memory can cause any sort of problem. If you have 2 DIMMS, try them one at a time. There is no GPU. The chipset does the graphics. There are 4 parts involved: the cable, the panel, the inverter and the motherboard. The inverter is VERY unlikely to be the problem. (It just converts DC to AC)  The cable is possible, but I would expect that a bad cable would give you changing symptoms as you move the screen back and forth. If an external monitor shows the same bad picture, it is certainly the motherboard. If not, my guess is that the panel is slightly more likely to be the failing part, but the only way to be sure is to swap parts.

If it's a cable, a link to external monitor should give OK pic...if not, it's graphics memory...
As the memory is shared...try out the MEMtest86 bootable program...& let it check all your RAM...if there is a problem - replace the chips!
If those fail, your MBO is finished...think about buying another one...preferably with Quadro GPUs! ;)

I'd have to disagree here. If the intel GPU did actually die it's the first I'm aware of ever dying, but the nVidia were plagued with failures, but in any case there was a recent cache of brand new motherboards for this model found, the latest revision with support for Penryn processors and I think there are a couple left. If you'd like one you can send me a PM and I'll confirm it's still available.

Looking at the first photo I must admit it looks like a failing backlight, but I agree with the other opinions here that if the external vga adapter displays the same the cause must be the motherboard. As for ram being the cause, I think if your ram was failing to this degree you'd have noticed stability issues too and constant blue screen crashes.  most ram problems can be confirmed by removing one module at  a time to identify the bad one.
