T61 fan became noisy since few weeks causeless

2008-05-16, 20:12 PM

Hello,

I am using my T61 (8889-2BG) for 8 months. I am very happy with the T61 but since 2 or 3 weeks the cooling fan has become noisy. Within the idle mode, greatest temperature GPU (48 °C), the fan now is doing app. 3300 rpm. This is very noisy for me. The crazy things, a few weeks ago the T61 was silent at this situation (fan speed app. 2500 rpm).

So anybody has an idea what could have happen? Did the change something with the last BIOS update some weeks ago? The current situation is very unsatisfying. I had a quite laptop and now it has become loud. Slowly but surely I am losing my IBM / Lenovo affinity: My A31 was noisy, my T43 was very noisy, my T60 is noisy, and my T61 was quite but became noisy now. Can't they fix this fan problem finally? This is a premium product for premium money so please build a premium laptop.

Any ideas why my T61 has became noisy since few weeks?

Hello mark, did you solve your problem?

Because i have the same problem. I'm currently owned a T61 (7663-A21) for nearly 1 year. And since this few days the fan has become noisy. The fan was never like this before, even when the fan is rotating at full speed.

But now even at idle mode the fan start humming "trrrrrr..." and it become worse when it goes to full speed, the sound like : "TRRRR..."

Does anyone have a solution?
Or is the hardware is failing? Is there a fix to this? Or replacement part?

Thanks before.

Ups, 1 more thing, just 2-3 weeks ago i formatted my hard drive and installing a fresh windows XP on it. After that with the thinkVantage system update i download all driver and tools for the new OS. Including a bios update. Does this caused the problem? (since my laptop never had any physical shock before - fall or bumping).

take a look in the vents at the bottom, if it looks like they're full of dust, it may be time to open up the case and give the fan a good cleaning.  Usually(not always) when the fan starts getting loud, its because the processor is heating up.  If your computer ever shuts down when the fan gets loud, then it is often the processor overheating.  Cleaning out the fan and the vents could help a bit.

same thing happened to me.  it seemed like all of a sudden the fan got louder and the area around my cpu got a lot hotter.

i opened up the laptop and dusted out the fan and heat sink.  there were some dust balls in there and i removed them with tweezers.  this seems to have fixed my problem.  i was amazed at how some dust could make my

it's interesting to hear that these issues are all happening to us around the same time.  i'm guessing we were all part of the first batch of people who got the t61s.

you can open up the laptop, the warranty allow you to do that. Just don't dismantle your internal components.

I would recommend buyin a can of compressed air, with a "straw" at the end, so you can easilly poke around in there without blowing spit all over the motherboard.  Remember, to try and blow all the dust OUT of the laptop, not further in.  Blow out the fan and heatsink, as those are what keeps your computer from overheating.

Hi. I've got the same problem and I'm running some time with this noisy fan. I've read on some forum that is fan problem and it should be changed in warranty. Could you tell me where it's written that we can open up the box, please? I can't find it - I just don't want to lose my warranty. Thanks for help!

Keyboard, ram and palmrests are considered Customer Replaceable Unit, so you have to do it yourself. If you need to upgrade ram, keyboard and palmrests then you need to open up your laptop. Maybe one of the mod or Mark_Lenovo can come and reassure you of your warranty.

I think this should no dust problem. My laptop is appr. 6 months old and I only used it in the docking station at my desk. I never used it in bed or other dusty areas.
