T61 recovery..

2016-02-19, 19:58 PM
My T61 starts but does not show any image on screen (T61 screen or external monitor through VGA).

A while ago, infrequently, it would not start, but with removing battery, unplugging, etc it would be ok. Then, after being caught in a rain/snow storm, there was some apparent wetness on the fan side having soaked through the bag, in addition to being very cold. After this initially it would not start. Using a space heater and hair dryer, it started again. It continued to start, but the screen became inconsistent, showing every other time, every third time, etc, until it no longer shows anything, though the hard drive seems to start, the fan, etc. There are not 3 beeps indicating failed GPU, however before the water, starting would occasionally, though infrequently, fail as mentioned. Without 3 beeps at startup indicating failed GPU, that can't be the problem. The problem being startup without screen image, gradually getting to that point over time, but fans, hard drive working. Unless it's motherboard related, don't know what else it could be.

Actually if you have nVidia graphics it does sound like it could be a typical gpu failure. The nvs140m often fails without any beeps and not all at once. The fact that you had poblems before the water issue would indicate  that's the cause and your symptoms are consistant.

Thanks TuuS for your reply. Yes, it does seem to be the gpu, though according to the motherboard p/n (42W7866) the graphics should be Intel x3100. I haven't found anything about the same problem with this for graphics but the symptoms are very similar. If the Intel graphics have failed, motherboard replacement seems necessary. That also seems to be necessary if the problem is water damage instead, as I can't see what else could be done. Though, I'd think water damage would be more of an instant impact, rather than this.

The intel graphics  chips don't normally fail but the liquid damage does explain the symptoms. You can try removing the battery and ac power, pressing the power button 10 times holding a few seconds each, and 30 seconds on the last and see if that clears the problem, but even if it does it will probably be temporary. If you want a new motherboard you can send me a PM as I believe there are a few rare NOS (new old stock) boards still available, or you can try your luck with a used one from an auction site. Also in the future if there is a chance of getting caught in the rain you may want to invest in a ziploc bag that is large enough and waterproof because water is deadly to electronics

Re: T61 recovery..

After breaking down the computer there is corrosion underside of the motherboard that must be from water/electricity, so, it's finished.  I will likely go with a used replacement considering the age and condition of the computer though I am curious of the cost of a NOS motherboard (Intel/Nvidia).  What I am wondering is whether it is advisable to change to an Nvidia  motherboard instead of replacing with another Intel board, namely a 2008-2010 Nvidia knowing the gpu fail issue (having to change the heat sink being the only necessary hardware change it seems for widescreen compatible motherboards in addition to new driver downloads), considering overall performance difference if any.  This took me by surprise and I'll definitely have a ziplock or waterproof bag for protection now.  Thanks again.

I agree, the corrosion on the board is conclusive and that's about the only thing I've ever seen destroy an Intel board. I'll send you a private message with some information on what boards are available, and as for converting to nVidia graphics, you're correct that it would require a new fan assembly and the best one to get is the one made by furakawa, it appears to have only been used in the last weeks of production, perhaps the middle of August 08 and has three heatpipes, the prior models used a toshiba fan that the motors tend to get noisey and fail often where the furakawa cools better and I've never seen one die.
