T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

2007-12-05, 22:10 PM
Long story short. When playing 3D games or running graphic intensive applications, T61p tends to randomly power off by itself, crash back to desktop with error message saying display driver stop responding and recovered, or just result in BSOD. In some occation, you will get a BSOD with Memmory parity error. This mostly happens to those who have 2 Dimms of RAM installed in their machine. If one dimm of RAM is removed, the problem seems to go away. In addition, some users sent their thinkpad to depot for a motherboard replacement and that seems to work.

This problems have been reported by a lot of T61p owners at other forums and it has been discussed extensively and we were told that Lenovo is seeking a solution. I am just hoping someone at this forum can give us some new inputs.

Re: T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

All,

I am marking this post as the solution for this thread as it needs to be solved at some point, and I believe we have the part logistics and now the updated tip to provide a definitive resolution for  all customers who experience this particular issue.  I believe many have already been resolved along the way due to the prior actions.

I'll refer back to my original answer on page 48 of this thread wherein I outlined the symptoms, explained that this is caused by a combination of tolerances and does not affect all systems.

The expanded set of part in the updated tip  proactively encompass the various system board progressions in this product line.  There may be other board numbers in circulation due to other, unrelated changes, and to facilitate our service logistics.

One part number variant not listed specifically in the tip is 42W7653.   This board is in the same series as 42W7877 and service should replace it with 44C3931 to resolve these symptoms.

Mark

Edit - updated link back to page 48 which was broken because thread had been moved.  Moves break intra-thread links.

I too have had the exact same problems.  Removing one stick of memory solves the problem (I have a T61p with a single 2GIG Stick of Memory and I upgraded to a second 2GIG stick).

I occasionally play games when I travel for work.  This machine is wonderful, even with only 2GIG.  But....  Hello Vista..  I want to bump it up to get the best performance posssible.

I've not seen any resolutions, hopefully this AMAZING new forum will get visibility!

Cheers,
JIM

Well, most of the guys that had their T60P fixed are done by sending them back to depot and have the mobo replaced. But it seems to me that lenovo can tell the good mobo from the bad one either since there are a few still report problems even after the planar card is replaced.

From the thread at TPF, there's another system (SnakeJW, is that yours or generalsu's?  can't remember) is on its way in to the engineers for diagnostics.  Hopefully this one will give the engineers the info they need to determine the exact cause.  I'd just wait until the results are in to pursue anything right now.

generalsu is the one that's sending to the engineer.

yup, there's nothing I can do but wait now. I placed a call for onsite mobo replacement, but they haven't call me back in 2 weeks now. I can choose to send it to depot, but from the mixed feedback of others that did send it in, I'm a bit hesitate to do so. It's more like gambling, plus, I need the laptop everyday.

Previous Windows versions could not handle more than 3GB RAM. Perhaps 4GB is still not fully supported in Vista.
Have you tried it with 3GB (1x 2GB, 1x 1GB)?
Or with a bit of luck Vista SP1 may fix it....

someone else that has the same problem had already tried that, as long as both slots are occupied, the problem keep coming back to haunt us. Even with 1+2G or 1+1 set up. Someone hinted RAM controller problems, others suspect a bad batch of defective mobo as not everyone is having this problem and problem just spiked recently.

Ok, here is something new.
I ran the system update today and one of the updates is a newer version of PC Doctor 5 for windows. So I gave it a try, and about 20 or so mins into the video card test, the thing power off again. I would like to hear what the tech suporrt will say this time. They can't use that " if you passed the PC doctor test then it's not a hardware issue" as excuse anymore I guess
I don't quite catch which part of the test cause the machine to shutdown, I think it's the "GPU Pipeline data test". All I remember it's a test with two pipes at the end and in the middle there were some green lines flashing, then it went dark. The whole thing just died. It has become somewhat unstable during the lighting test already.
I hope this could be helpful to Lenovo engineers in pin pointing the problem and finding a solution. But if it's indeed a hardware issue, I guess me and those unlucky ones will have no choice but have it fixed by lenovo.

Re: T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

Hello, I too am having same problems mentioned in the opening post. I ordered my T61p on 12/1, recieved on 12/7 and found that I was unable to play any games ( most commonly Bioshock and World of Warcraft ). The system would shut down; the screen would freeze; video freezed but sound stuck on loop; and blue screen. I installed 6 different drivers before going back to the stock driver to conclude that changing the drivers did nothing.

Also, I ran 3dMark06 as soon as I got the PC, it finished with a 4072 and without any problems. Someone at the unofficial thinkpad forums send their laptop in for repair and a tech told him that they ran 3dmark06 successfully so they were "unable to duplicate the error." They should be testing the systems with real, up -to-date games (Bioshock, Crysis, Call of Duty 4) and not just calling it quits with 3dmark06.

Here is my T61p config:

t7700 cpu
GeForce Quadro 570M
100 gb 7200rpm HDD
2x1GB PC5300. 667 mhz RAM
9-cell Li-Ion battery (10.8V, 7.8AH)
Intel 4965AGN 802.11a/b/g/n
Windows XP Pro 32bit
2 yr extended warrenty (not on-site)

Please, will someone from Lenovo keep us updated daily on how this is going? Should I ship my unit out for repair or wait for some kind of hotfix? I'm kind of pressed for time to decide because I'm leaving to go back to school in the beginning of January and my laptop will be the only PC I'm bringing.
