Yes this is a mysterious issue and yes it is frustrating, but I don't see why people are so angry, all you have to do is contact Lenovo support and start the repairs process.  They will repair your machine, then when it's fixed you will be happy right?  No biggie.

yeah - but what if for somebody this is primary computer and even more - it is the tool in work (programmer) ? sending the lappy to service means 2 weeks ( or more - even to five - here in poland ) without computer - which equals to 2 weeks without a job ,without cash etc .. now u get it ?

when i buy THINKPAD i buy it not because it is pretty .. or functional or sth. else .. i buy it because i am sure that it is STABLE. Thats why everybody are so angry - because THINKPAD is no more stable and reliable ..

i bought my lap yesterday with configuration : t7800 + 2gig mem + 200 gb hdd .. i've added a second 2 gigs of ram ( original hynix memory designed for lenovo thinkpad) and got the same issues as everybody here - sudden shutdowns while performing anything that uses graphic card ...

Re: T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

is this thread alive ? is lenovo aware of the issue existence ?
maybe somebody from lenovo can tell us if this is a hardware problem or we must wait only for bios update ?

additional information about my issue :
disabling intel speed step didnt helped
disabling the system bus power management in bios didnt helped also
disabling all power management in bios and thinkpad power manager didnt helped also

problem exists while 2 x 2gb are inserted , problem is detectable in Vista x86(sees only 3gig) and Vista x64 also .

with Intel turbo memory on board the problem is more frequent . removing turbo memory makes the pc more stable .. in example :

with turbo memory t61p shutdowns every 10 mins or more frequently..
without turbo memory system shutdowns only while performing graphic operations - i.eg watching hd movie or playing 3d game

a milliseconds before shutdown the little white artefacts can be observed on the screen.

in booth vista x86 vista x64 problem is more seenable when system has allocated more than 2gig physical memory

if anybody from lenovo wants more information i can answer to your questions ..

I can only add that earlier i had T61 laptop with 14" screen with t7700 cpu and nvidia quadro 140 nvs , with also 4 gig of ram and there was no such of problems

Noder,

Thanks for your thoughts and summation.   Let me assure you that these occurrences are taken seriously, and your point that the time to service a machine could vary from country to country and that the impact to everyone may not be the same was certainly a helpful reminder.

While none of the setting changes have resolved the issue, it sounds like speedstep and other setting changes extend the time before the lockup / BSOD / graphic artifact symptoms occur, correct?

That may be helpful to understand.

The new symptoms i've observed is that the problem is occuring more often when the bios version is updated to the newest (2.07-1.08) and when graphic card is getting hot, the graphic card is getting hot almost always - even when doing nothing, everest shows 75 degrees (celsius).

Mark_Lenovo - do you have any information from technicians ?

Can anyone confirm whether this issue is also in teh T60's. I have a T60 with two modules installed and i've been getting lockups/blue screens/reboots from the first week. They are very intermitent. After finding this thread a few hours ago, I removed one memory module to see if the problem goes away.

Mark,

>While none of the setting changes have resolved the issue, it sounds like speedstep and other setting changes extend the >time before the lockup / BSOD / graphic artifact symptoms occur, correct?

For me, changing the speedstep setting (limiting the CPU speed) fixed it - as I've posted in the thinkpads.com forum ( http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=47755&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=390&sid=eecdad869566e92115468204add1c156 ).

I *think* it is somehow heat related - I've been able to run it for longer times with the heat in my living room turned down, and with a huge external fan blowing right into the air intake to help the cooler move the hot air out of the computer.
But as to why it is so, I have no clue - with just a single stick of RAM it does not look like the computer gets very hot.

Have your engineering people tried to provoke the faults in a computer that is known to have the problem in a hotter environment than they normally work in ? It might make the problem more evident...

Regards
Kim Rasmussen

recently i've downloaded a NVIDIA nTune software to have a better view on what is going with graphics card, and what i see is ofcourse the high temperature almost all time high (70 - 75 degrees), and the next thing i've noticed is that the RPM's of the main fan (ventilator) is always 2304 rpm's

i'm attaching the link to the capture of the nTune utility (its in Polish language but i've selected the values)

Hi guys,

don't wonna be a smart-ass, but I don't think that this problem is a heat problem.

First of all, gpu are not cpu. Nvidia graphic adapters can take heat up to 120°C before shutting down. On a desktop with medium air-flow performance these cards run usually stable at 100°C. So 70 °C should be absolutely fine - though not comfortable on your lap ;)

Besides that, until now nobody could explain why this problem also accurs when running only Windows Vista Dreamscene - a real hardcore 3D killer app ;)
For all who are wondering what Dreamscene is, here's an explanation:

Update: I am still discussing with Lenovo support to replace my motherboard. The very friendly lenovo employee knows about this thread, but still insists on replacing the memory first.

Well - if they find something xmem86+ does not find - go ahead ;)

All will be good....
