Hi guys,

don't wonna be a smart-ass, but I don't think that this problem is a heat problem.

First of all, gpu are not cpu. Nvidia graphic adapters can take heat up to 120°C before shutting down. On a desktop with medium air-flow performance these cards run usually stable at 100°C. So 70 °C should be absolutely fine - though not comfortable on your lap ;)

no offence but i think you are wrong - as u can see in the service manual for t61p 15" - the heat pipe of graphic card is connected to the cpu heat pipe, so if graphic card is getting hotter - the cpu is getting hotter too (which can be seen on "everest monitoring application" running another 3d app in the separate window) - ofcourse you are right that nvidia chips are stable on 100 degrees - but cpu is not .. again it can be seen in t7800 cpu reference manual - maximum operating stable temperature is about 90 degrees, and at 100 degrees cpu shutdowns the system to avoid damage to the hardware. my opinion is - the shutdown is made by cpu which got hot from gpu ..

Hi,

this issue is not related to heat (you can see discussion on TF). The main symptom is two memory modules installed. For example me. If I have 2 DIMs any 3D application crashes immediately. If I have only one DIM I can run these application many hours without crashing and computer gets hot.

Re: T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

Not sure if I quite buy the strenuousness of the app and heat as being the issues.

I have 4GB in a 14" T61p, 2.6Ghz CPU. Vista 64, Turbo mem, bluetooth, pretty much a decked-out box.

I just completed the latest Call of Duty 4 game, ran flawlessly with all the trimmings at the native resolution of the laptop! Made it run super-hot but IT NEVER CRASHED ONCE. This is a modern game, released after bioshock.

I then tried again bioshock and turned ALL the details waaaay down, low resolution, everything pretty much at it's lowest.

It rebooted my PC, barely saw the loading screen.

Then I disabled speedstep.

The game showed a few seconds of the intro, then locked up, but this time I was able to shut it down.

Bioshock ran OK at the same low settings on an old T60! So, there's NO way it's more strenuous on the CPU and GPU than CoD4 at max settings.

I use this box for ultra-heavy work, including very strenuous sessions of VMWare. Always stable under the most ridiculous load.

Also, never had problems with 3Dmark like others, works fine. Really, just bioshock and crysis (the latter not as much) have issues.

I've also ran older games like Tribes and Half-life 2 with no issues, regardless of GPU settings (antialiasing etc that make things strenuous even if the app is not demanding).

Maybe it's a CPU/northbridge/GPU stepping issue? Pick one or more...

I kinda want a replacement motherboard but since this is my work machine I'm kinda loath to not have it for a while. If I could bring it personally to a local depot and wait while they swap the thing it would be OK.

i had the same machine as you describing - T61 with 14" but with t7700 not t7800 cpu .. and everything was fine .. the problem seems to be with 15" models

Well I have the problem and it's a 14" model, so obviously some 14" machines have the issue. It's not as bad as others describe (doesn't fail any tests, just crysis and bioshock) but still there is an issue.

Interesting that you mention stepping level. I have G0 stepping T7700 in my T61p...but my colleague has E1 stepping. I wonder if there is a difference? Note that I haven't seen the problem with my G0 stepping CPU.

I do not think processor stepping may be releated to t61p video issue as, by replacing the mobo the processor is still the same, or at least I think so. My faulty tp has a T7500 processor, stepping B, revision B3.
