Re: T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

After a weekend of Bioshock I can safely say that the replacement RAM fixed the problem.  It ran Bioshock in a loop for about 12 hours without a problem on Saturday and I let it do a bunch of number crunching and network stuff on Sunday for about 20 hours.  No random wifi disappearing, no blue screens and no reboots.  Beautiful.

I guess I'd encourage everyone who is having this problem to just call tech support, get your box and send it in.  The IBM portion of the interaction was minimal.  The DHL part sucked for me but that was all the driver.   I wasted way more time rebooting the stupid thing than I spent hobbling by on an old computer.

I had my t61p serviced by IBM Romania. I have spoken by phone with a guy named George a few weeks before to let him know about our problems here. I decided to wait a bit and keep an eye on this helpful thread hoping we will find a way to avoid planar replacement. Bad choice for me because after my email George ordered the mobo and it took only a few days to arrive. Today I took the laptop by myself and in 45 minutes they replaced the planar. Nice guys and super-service.

Now, it looks I am a happy person; everything runs without a hitch. I will keep you posted after intensive testing.

It seems Lenovo can not explain what was wrong. I am still waiting to find out the cause of our problems.

It seems that some people are getting their machines to finally work.
However I wonder how many of these people have 4GB in there systems.

I too had this problem initially when I purchased my T61 from Lenovo back last year.
I sent it back in and they replaced the memeory which at that time was 2-1GB sticks.

Everything worked perfectly, I mean perfectly. That is until I upgraded to 4GB of memory.
Then it started happening all over again. I wonder is this system really that finicky about its memory?
Also doing a full  memory test I don't have any problems, so the memory isn't bad.

I still believe there is an issue that needs to be resolved and that it is being covered up by replacing the memory.
Or at least in my case.

I guess the question is... is there anyone here with 4GB of memory that doesn't have this problem or got it resolved?

Read Bender's post - he had and still has 4G of memory.

Hello,

had my t61p repaired in the UK. They have only replaced the motherboard (so I believe) and as far as I have been able to test in the past few days (even with several hours of intensive gaming) *none* of the previously experienced issues has surfaced (same system configuration).

this is *very* good news. I guess it might remain a mystery what was/is causing this problem.

I do still have an unrelated issue with performing a chkdsk operation at boot time (after 70 mins into the chkdsk the HDD stops responding and the system hangs requiring a power cycle) but I will follow this up in a different thread.

cheers,
andrea

So what should be done then? Should the laptop be sent in for a planar card replacement?
How do you approach lenovo about this? And how do you know they'll put one in there that works?

Also if a planar card isn't the motherboard what is it?

Hello biohazard2k,

> And how do you know they'll put one in there that works?
well, in my case I listed the apps giving me problems and I believe the IBM service engineeres tested the new motherboard to make sure the issues were not there anymore.

I then repeated the same tests when I got the laptop back.

> Also if a planar card isn't the motherboard what is it?
the planar card *is* the motherboard, different names all pointing to the same part.

Re: T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

Well my problem may be a little more unique now.
My original system came with 2-1GB sticks of lenovo memory.
I was originally having problems with Unreal Tournament Crashing left and right, blue screens and shut downs.
So I sent it in. They replaced the memory, everything was good.

Then I got a good deal on 2-2GB sticks of memory. I  put both of them and then the problem came back, but only on a few applications not UT3. At first I thought it was the game, but then I took out one of the sticks and sure enough it worked fine.
I don't want to live with just 2GB's of memory for the remainder of the life of my laptop. Nor do I really want to send it in again.
I would hope Lenovo would find the problem and issue a BIOS update, but the more and more I read this it sounds like a motherboard replacement is key.

The thing I don't want to happen is send it in and wait  a million years for them to aquire another motherboard or replace it.
Nor do I want to send it in and have them blame it on my perfectly good 3rd party memory that works perfectly fine individually.

What should I do or how should I approach lenovo considering both my HD and memory have been upgraded?

Hello biohazard2k,

we all wish for a BIOS update (or anything 'soft' equivalent) that fixes the experienced problems but so far the only reliable solution is a motherboard swap.

this is why when I was able to afford to be a week without the laptop I arranged a repair with the UK IBM service.

I have to say they initially started to say I was not using the same memory I bought the laptop with or this was a business laptop not made for games but they soon realised (pointing them at this official forum and at the http://forum.thinkpads.com/ one) that this was indeed a bona-fide issue.

I do still have another unresolved issue with chkdsk not working at all during a boot-time operation (another thread on this forum) but it is another mysterious issue yet to be explained/fixed.

Crap it looks like I'm going to have to send it in again.
It's just so hard to live without this thing though.
