Re: T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

2008-02-18, 15:47 PM

You would've thought that by now lenovo has issued a statement at least internally about this problem and to be aware of customers who show the symptoms.  And yet, we still see some of supposedly got theirs repaired only to see the problem come back after upgrading a simple thing such as ram from 2gb to 4gb.

I really don't feel like arguing over the phone trying to convince them I have the same  problem.  So why won't lenovo let it's support staff know what to look for when a customer describes the problems.   I guess they are just hoping everyone will just forget about it and can't be bothered to send it back for repairs and those who don't even know they have a problem yet..until they months down the road they run a 3d or intensive program that crops up.

I just don't want to send it in and get it back with the same problem.   That's my gripe.

Well I called Lenovo for a shipping box. We'll see what happens, if anything.

ThinkP,

You have some very valid points.

Firstly, to you and to Biohazard2K, if you are sending to the depot for this problem and believe you need a planar replacement, please let me know if you need help.   You can send the case number to me via PM.

I feel confident that Lenovo will issue a tip or bulletin once the underlying cause is determined and final fix provided.

In the meantime, we are still testing with the systems that we brought in from some of the forum members, and we have been able to reproduce the symptom, and take some measurements of the system as it goes into 3D graphics mode.  The cause of the observed effects is being actively investigated and testing continues.

That said, I would advise that we should be cautious in drawing conclusions.   For those that have been involved with this and parallel forum threads for months and have actively tested and tried things, I understand the confidence you may have in seeking a specific remedy from service that, in most cases chronicled here, resolves the issue.

I might suggest that we keep in mind that other customers may join the forum, skim this thread and experience a set of symptoms they believe is a fit for the problem, but could wind up being software or memory, or other issue and not this one.

Hello Mark,

At this point Lenovo should have, through the serviced systems, a meaningful statistical set of motherboards that should display consistently/repeatedly the same set of experienced issues.

From my perspective (i.e. without the benefit of inner Lenovo technology/expertise/knowledge) looking at the overall history of my experienced issue I can't fail to notice that as soon as the motherboard was replaced (and just that, no changes to any of the other hardware and software components) my system has completely stopped running into these reported issues.

Not sure about the costs/feasibility but if Lenovo would rebuild a system using my swapped out motherboard and stock components I strongly believe that system too would show/experience the same graphics problems and help in pinpointing the actual cause.

I have to agree with Mark that these forum threads are now so voluminous that a causal reader could wrongly believe or relate experienced issues with those described here.

Many thanks once again for the perseverance.

I purchased a 2GB stick today from Lenovo.  I have a 6457-B82 and it was shipped on 10/7/07.

I hope and pray that I do not have this issue.  I purchased the on-site service, so if worst case scenario they will swap out the board at my home office.

Mark from Lenovo, if we potentially have a batch of PlanarBoards (System Boards) as the root cause, how do I ensure I get a current board.  I do not mind waiting for a couple of weeks if it means getting the most recent board.

This is, assuming I have the issue.  I'll sacrifice a chicken and a goat and hope for the best.

Cheers
JIM

P.S.   Thank you for bringing these forums back.  It's another reason to buy Lenovo.

T61p shuts down when playing games

2008-03-03, 18:59 PM
Hi,

I just received a T61p.  When I play games (World of Warcraft, Bioshock Demo) the machine shuts down after a seemingly random amount of time.  Sometimes I can play for more than an hour and sometimes it shuts down after a minute or a few minutes.  Actually when I first got it I played WoW for a couple hours and no shutdown but then the next time I played it shut down after about 15 minutes.  Since then it seems to be random as to when it shuts down.

The shutdown is as if someone pulled the plug out of the machine.  It doesn't restart, just total shutdown.  I see no BSOD or errors so I'm not sure what is going on.

When I power up the machine again I get a message saying it encountered an unexpected shutdown and it's initializing then I get to choose to start Windows (Vista) in safe mode or normally.

I'm not sure what I can do.  I've updated drivers but it has not worked.  Should I be checking something else?  Would a clean install help?

Hi guys,

---------------bump---------------

Is there any news on the developer front?

No new posts from Marc since some time now....

Marc can you please give a statement if there is any chance on solving this issue on a soft-/firmware basis, or is there no other way than replacing the motherboard?

Thanks in advance...

St.

I would like to know if there is an update as well.

I seem to get similar issues when playing games on a T61p.  The machine just shuts down at random times.  No errors or anything it just shuts down as if the power has been pulled.

Is there a resolution to this issue?

You may have posted to the T61P discussion thread on these kinds of issues with 3D games.

What memory configuration are you running?
