Re: T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

2008-03-28, 20:49 PM

All,

We do understand the issue.  There is a resolution in sight, and I'd ask you to bear with us a bit longer as it has not been officially released or communicated throughout the business.

No, we will not "cripple" the machine in any way.

No, it is not a thermal problem.

The observation on underclocking is interesting, but not directly related to the issue.  I can see how underclocking reduces some demands on the system, but is not part of the resolution.

D4ve - that was some good work though.   I can see how that changes some of the variables in the equation.

Axure

While everyone is always free to evaluate competitive models, I can assure you that those working the issue have acted with due diligence, and in a professional manner.  While, this may be taking longer than any of us would prefer, it is worthwhile to get it right and restore confidence rather than rushing out with an ill informed answer.

Categorically, the management structure of Lenovo has nothing to do with this issue.

Mark, thank you for your answer. I really appreciate it.

See, just communicating with your customers can make a big difference and earn you a lot of understanding. Lack of communication can create frustration.

The only thing I would really like to learn now would be some dates, at least in approximate terms.

And by the way, this topic is pretty hot in other places too. I am frequenting the forums of the Polish Notebookcheck and we've got at least four fellows there who have "broken" T61ps (and hopelessly doomed to our Lenovo tech service *) and a couple more considering to buy a T61p. I would be more than happy to spread the good news... But it has yet to come.

(*) - one guy is now dealing with them for a couple of weeks already. They've replaced his motherboard (supposedly brought from Italy) and it didn't help a bit. They're telling him Quadro doesn't have to work with games, 'cuz it's a professional card. Doesn't Lenovo have a SWAT team to pacify their own branches so that they don't spoil your image? ;-)

Well since Mark said to wait as the solution will be released soon.... I won't test the underclock.

But it is a good find though...Tempting because we all want our systems to operate at or near it's full potential without fail.

Thanks for updating Mark.  We eagerly await.

Thanks for posting an update Mark.   I know everyone appreciates all the work you've been doing.  It is really helpful to have these forums and to have a sensible rep from Lenovo to communicate with.  It's good to hear that the fix will not cripple machines.

I'm sure you can tell everyone is really eagerly awaiting news on the issue and possible solution :)

Hmmm...... I see that the NVIDA Quadro FX 570 graphics card is no longer an option on the T series. On the positive side, they may have found the culprit. On the negative side, I sure won't be buying any laptop with a 128meg graphics card.

I had my heart set on a Thinkpad and I was hoping to take advantage of the current deals, but it's not looking good at this stage. :smileysad:

Thanks Mark!  This sounds promising and gives me hope.  You are correct, it is much better to have a correct solution than one rushed out.  Hope it arrives soon.

BTW - Dave, what site are you looking at?  I just went to the Lenovo US site and they are still offering the T61p with the Quadro 570.  What I did see change is the way they are offering Mobile broadband(Cell phone network).  Lenovo seems to have done a better job with it now.  It was a source of confusion for me when configuring my machine, now it makes more sense.  They let you have the notebook be WWAN ready without having to commit to a provider(ex: ATAT, Verizon etc).  I like it!!

I looked very hard at T61's vs M1530's and chose the Thinkpad.  But after seeing these fundamental problems, I will not be placing an order until these issues are solved by Lenovo, or I match all numbers in the Mega Millions lotto.  I need a professional business box, not a hobby machine.  This post is to alert Lenovo that this potential customer is being forced to turn to the darkside and look at Dells.

Hi Mark,

Any idea if this fix is going to require sending the systems in, or is this going to be a bios update or software fix that the end-user can execute?

Thanks!

The_Fire_Snake,

Thanks...

I see it now. It seems if you go through one customization process it doesn't even show the T61P. They other process (selecting laptops with 15" monitors) does show the T61P with the 570 graphics card.

Stan1911,

Well, it's even a more important decision in my case. One of my tasks at work is to make the decisions on the hardware that we utilize throughout the company. During the course of the next 2 years, we have 23 Dell laptops (and a larger number of desktops/workstations) that are coming up for replacement. Since I personally have had good luck with Thinkpads in the past and actually prefer certain features and aspects of the Thinkpads, I thought this would be a great opportunity to get a feel for the "new" Thinkpads, and if satisfied, recommend them as replacements to the Dells going forward.

Of course, I don't want to have these folks knocking on my door if there are inherit hardware, or engineering issues with the new Thinkpads.

With that said, if I get a bad one, rest assured, no one else in the company will have to deal with the problem. :smileywink:
