Re: T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

Hey Folks,

I'm also a proud owner of a T61p. I've encountered the same problems(BSOD) like the rest of you.
The same workaround(pull off one memory bar), works fine with my thinkpad. No crashes etc.
I also called the german IBM/Lenovo support for help and they send me two new 1GB bars. No change, still BSOD.
But wonders still happen:

Last night, some flash of genius made me check my BIOS settings. I found a section called graphics, where you can set the initial video adapter(or similar) from internal, to PCI-Express. Don't ask me why but Call of Duty4, Counter Strike Source, Bioshock etc, runs smooth as butter now - with BOTH memory bars inserted!!
Maybe this won't work with your configuration, but one should give it a try.

Please let me know, if it worked with your configuration.

Greetings from "Kraut" Germany
Peter

P:S: my config:

15.4"
2.2 ghz T7500 core 2 duo
100gb 5400rpm drive
2 gb Ram
XP Professional SP2
Nvidia Quadro 570m 256mb -

I have a T61p and everything works great.  I have two identical Hitachi 100 gb 7200 hard drives.  The only difference is that one is the Vista Ultimate, Lenovo factory image and the other is a clean install from a Vista Ultimate OEM Anytime DVD.

The factory image hard drive consistently causes crashes with high end 3d games.  However, the clean install hard drive works great with all of the high end 3d games.  By the way, my T61p has two 2gb ram sticks (total 4 gb).

tpad, you get crashes when using the factory image hard drive you said, but not with your clean install?

Would you be willing to try removing one of your sticks of RAM, then seeing if the factory image still crashes when playing games?

That would tell us if the crashes you are experiencing follow the same pattern as the crashes other people are having, or if they are something different entirely.

I've just tried the setting in the bios, still no change for me.  I am hoping to try a clean install of vista shortly, but need to get a second hard drive first as I need to keep my XP installation intact.

Most times the games hang up I can control-alt-delete out to the task manager most times the operating system informs me that the video driver has crashed and then I am stuck in a incredibly low resolution, or the system just powers itself down,  are those the same symptoms that others are having?

I really hope lenovo keeps us updated frequently with progress reports.  Also How often does lenovo update the drivers to match Nvidia's releases?  I noticed they are up around 163.75 or something but the drivers installed on the laptop are 156.66

An update on my T61p's status:

I replaced the 2x 1GB RAM sticks with a single 2GB stick. Now the laptop runs perfectly with games, no crashes, shutdowns, or BSODs. Still unfortunate because the laptop goes right back to crashing and shuting down while gaming with 2 GB +1 GB in it.

Almost 2 weeks have passed since topic was created, have the engineers found the problem yet?

"Well I was getting BSODs with "Parity/Memory Parity" msg during some gaming with my T61 with 1gX2 set up, also with nvidia 140m. I updated computer but didn't help. BUT what did was changing the bios setting Virtualization Technology to ENABLE.

Hope this helps,"

EDIT: Well I might have spoken too soon, Got another blue screen. Seemed to help for a few hours... Please fix this  problem Lenovo!

jin_ftw, 2 weeks is nothing, these things can take time.  This issue has been around for months not weeks.

computersavt, can you verify that you have the latest BIOS version, which is 2.07 ?  If not, can you try updating to this version?

This bios version is pretty new and there is a chance it might solve these problems, but no one seems to know for sure yet, we need to get people to install this update ASAP and find out if it fixes things...

Those of you who are still having crashes in 3D games, can you please post what version of BIOS you have now, and then try the new version and see if it has any effect on your problems?

The new version of BIOS can be found here:

well... I have updated the BIOS to 2.07 and the NVIDIA driver (156.85 available via Windows Update) and the same problems are still present.

the system crashes *very* regularly when playing 'Pirates of Caribbean Online'.
