Re: T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

Thank you for the update, I am continuing the monitor the boards and am willing to be patient.  After turning down my graphical settings and making an effort to monitor and mitigate the heat of my system, i have been having far less problems while playing WoW. However, it does still stutter on occassion, which makes my heart leap into my throat in fear of a shutdown.  Also I have had some occassions where upon starting the game, I have an extremely low framerate for no apparant reason, and only by rebooting the computer does it go back up to normal. So while I am limping along for now, I eagerly await some of the answers to this problem.

poptartkiller, when I say "new" T61p, I mean with the technical problem solved. I wouldn't expect any hardware modifications, unless they put in a different motherboard to get the thing to work (hopefully at least as efficient as the old one). Of course, I'd love to see a better graphics chip (say, a Quadro based on GF 9600GT), but I don't think that's going to happen.

I do expect, though, the price tag to be lower than it's been with the "old" (disfunctional) T61p, since the market value of Quadro FX 570m has deteriorated significantly over last few months: new GeForces 9x00 have been introduced, the 8x00 prices have fallen sharply. If Lenovo fails to recognize those market shifts, I'll look somewhere else or wait for the new Dell e6500 (and will advise others to do the same).

From doing a little online research, I've found that Sony and HP owners have experienced similar problems.  This suggests either a MOBO problem or a possible NVidia conflict.  The big difference here is that Lenovo has publicly acknowledged the problem and has dedicated resources towards fixing it, whereas Sony et al are keeping mum.

Although I would prefer an immediate solution to this problem, I like the fact that Lenovo is addressing it (glacially to be sure) rather than ignoring it.

I placed my order for a T61P and hope to be providing forum readers with positive reviews.

Regards

ZR601, do you have links to those other issues?

Someone linked me to another forum once, but it was for desktops.  They were experiencing a similar issue where playing games while using a certain number of dimms would crash/bsod/freeze/shutdown their machines.  In that case they all had in common Nvidia cards.  Unfortunately in that forum there was no acknoledgement of the issue or resolution (it wasn't a company forum).

It's funny because recently I saw news about what causes the most crashes in Windows and Nvidia was the number one source of all Windows crashes.

So what's better at this point: motherboard replacement, buy 2 gb memory dim, wait for a solution?

"ZR601, do you have links to those other issues?"

Sorry, I did not bookmark them.  There are a few on Notebookreview and some of the tech blogs.  The complaints are more sporadic and less organized than here.  I found them as I was beginning to look into the HP 8510 and Sony FZ's.  It appears that 15.4" laptops are being used more often as gaming platforms, which may be one reason why these problems are beginning to crop up more frequently.

If I stumble over one of those threads again, I'll post it here.

Well, I'm not sure Lenovo has acknowledged this - their tech support staff certainly appear ignorant of it.  And I hate to say this, but Mark could probably get fired if Senior Management at Lenovo hear that he's acknowledged this issue as an identified problem that has been reconized but as yet unresolved.

StevenBrouwer,  if you have the issue I would first remove 1 dimm to make sure it's the same issue.  It seems that is the only way to tell right now if you have the issue in addition to your machine crashing/bsod/freeze/shutdown when doing some 3D application.

For me I decided to buy a 2gb stick and use just one dimm and wait for a solution.  If the solution is to send it in then I'll do that... but I don't want to send it in right now since it doesn't sound like the depot would know what to do with the machine.
