Re: T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

All,

A quick update.  Yes, 42W7653 is being added along with a number of other P/Ns .   The paperwork is complete and we have the list of new "uplevel"  service part numbers that result - this work completed end of last week.

We are working with suppliers to effect these changes, get the new boards in service stock, and then will update the tip on the support site with the total list of new parts.  (Systems built on or after 3/20/08 should be clean as previously noted - these additional boards being updated are to cover prior board variants)

This is a comprehensive effort and the logistics to complete it will realistically take some weeks yet.

However, once done, I feel confident that we will be able to put this issue to rest finally.

Thanks,

Mark

No more crashes with two dimms!
I told about the crashing problem to finnish Lenovo support, and mentioned MIGR-69684 solution.
I got changed my 42W7653 planar. I don't know the new part number, but my system changed from 6460-67U to 6460-67V.
Thanks for (Mark) Lenovo for good warranty support and service!

Great news Mark. Please let us know what MIGR to bring up when the parts are ready.

I too am having this problem on a 15.4" T61p with the 44C3931 planar.  It's a 6459-CTO running Vista Ultimate with a single 2gb dimm.  I'm running the 169.09 drivers from Laptopvideo2go, but I observed the same behavior with the stock drivers.  Underclocking the GPU does solve the crashing issue.  It still gets extremely warm when underclocked.

I did do something that I hope doesn't affect my warranty however.  I hadn't found this thread yet, so I fell back on my desktop system builder experience.  I took apart my T61p and replaced the crap thermal compound that was covering the CPU and GPU with a thin layer of Arctic Silver.  It originally had good contact on the CPU, but it was only contacting the right 1/3rd of the GPU.  The temps only dropped by a degree or so, so I guess I wasted my time.  Hope I didn't kill my warranty by doing this.

JackHain,

Don't scare me like that, the planar you have (44C3931) supposed to be the solution to the problem discussed in this thread according to Mark and MIGR-69684...

I didn't mean to scare anyone.  I suppose it's possible that I did something wrong with the drivers.  All I know is that with the laptop plugged in and set to "Power Source Optimized"; I can play the new Penny Arcade game for about 10-15 minutes before the machine powers off.  I can't turn it back on until I unplug and remove the battery from the laptop for a few seconds.

Even the little spinning nvidia logo in the control panel will cause my GPU temperatures to rise.  I can transcode videos....compress multi-gigabyte files.....and otherwise hammer the processor for extended periods of time without any issues, but as soon as I get the smallest bit of 3D effects on the screen I have to worry about overheating the GPU.

The machine is pretty much fully loaded.....so I guess it's possible that I'm just trying to draw too much power.

 - 2gb RAM on one DIMM
 - 250gb 5400rpm HDD
 - Intel Turbo Memory
 - Intel 4965AGN Wireless
 - Integrated Bluetooth
 - DVD Burner

Maybe the GPU just puts it over the top.  If any mods are interested in my serial number, please PM me.

Come to think of it.....I did install Vista SP1 and a slew of other updates.

I'll throw a different drive in the machine and restore XP onto it this weekend and attempt to reproduce the overheating.  If all is good with XP, I'll restore a clean copy of Vista onto the drive and attempt to overheat it again.  I will not apply ANY updates during either scenario.

Jack

how long ago did you get this T61p ??  Also are you certain that's the planar number?

I'm interested in whether you reproduce this with stock installation like when you received the laptop from LENOVO.

Also make sure you do the same tests with like a Bioshock demo or Callofduty 4 demo etc.

This is interesting if it's the same planar they are using to replace the bad ones with.  :smileysurprised:

Product - T61p (6459-CTO)
Serial - ****** <---- Not really comfortable leaving this out here.
Built - 4/9/2008

Had to send it back one day after receiving it because of a bad BIOS update....due to UAC being enabled in Vista....shouldn't the update program be able to detect that?  Before I sent the unit out I marked the planar with a Sharpie under the RAM just to make sure that it was a different board when I got it back.  After I got the laptop back I opened it up to check for the mark....it wasn't there.  I have visually confirmed that the replacement planar used is a 44C3931.

I will try restoring a clean image to a secondary hard drive and beat on the GPU.  I'll try the most intensive OpenGL and Direct3D applications I can get my hands on.

My T61p only occassionally either shuts down completely or the graphics driver crashes and doesn't recover.  This only happens after about 15 - 20 mins into a 3D game.  I have a Quadro 570m.  Crysis demo won't even play.  It would load and then the machine would just shut off.  So far it has crashed during Unreal Tournament 3, Portal and Crysis doesn't really count since they game never even loads.Sometimes I can play UT3 for hours without any problems and other times it overheats and crashes.  Portal seems to more consistently crash every so long into playing.
