Im glad I finally found this thread. I have a 42W7653 FRU planar. I used to have random freezes while playing games before, I just always though it was because I had the LaptopVideo2go modified inf drivers. Now I have been getting BSODs with a STOP 0x0000000A error whenever playing games. I think its from the same problem as the freeze and is due to the planar. Hopefully the MIGR is updated soon so I can try and get it serviced. I just recently had to get a new HD cause my old one is faulty, glad I am still under warranty.

Thanks for all the Support Mark.

Yeah if you're a gamer you must get this fix, it makes a big difference!

I had this problem since late October of last year but since I got the fix, my laptop is more stable for gaming than some of my friends' desktop gaming rigs.  It's uncrashable now, I kid you not.

For lan parties I picked up one of those aluminum laptop cooling pads that has fans under it, and installed tpfancontrol so I could manually run the fan at full speed when gaming.  These 2 things were mostly for comfort and just to take care of my investment, I didn't NEED them.  The laptop does fine even without them, the keyboard just gets really hot on the left side where the GPU and CPU are, which can get uncomfortable when gaming because my left hand is on those keys for long periods of time  :)  With tpfancontrol and the cooling pad the keyboard stays cool and comfortable.

Does this 44C3931 planar come installed in any newly built T61Ps, or is it only ever supplied as a replacement? It's not listed in the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

Yams, did anyone do parts lookup for you yet?  If not, I can do it for you, you can PM me your serial number.  Parts lookup appears to be working for me.

Thanks, but it started working for me.

Yep, I have 42W7653. Should I call it in or wait?

Sorry for the bump, but I'd like to get this fixed. Should I go ahead and call and reference MIGR-69684 to whoever I talk to?

I called them and referenced MIGR-69684 and my T61p is currently with them having it's planar replaced even though I had the 42W7653 like you. Go ahead.

Hi all,

I thought I give a little status update on what's going on with my just returned laptop.

I also had the planar replaced - my system was built in 12/07. For planar FRU have a look at my previous post.

At first everything seemed perfect. Bioshock played for 30 min flawless - no power down. I didn't have the time to check longer that day.

When I had more time to investigate my system, I installed LOTRO and here we go again.

This time, the system rebooted and crashed my harddrive. I couldn't even log into Vista anymore.

OK - I thought maybe a clean install from the lenovo system dvds is required when a motherboard replacement had been performed.

So I installed a clean (Lenovo) Vista and everything is the same as the last 7 month since I own this T61p.

Activating Dreamscene - 3 seconds and the system goes down.
Using any 3D application - after a few seconds the system goes down.

I now will again get a motherboard replacement...

I hope that your repair history is going a better way.

Will give a report when it comes back the next time....

All will be good???

st.

I'm pretty disappointed. After sending my laptop with the 42W7653 Planar and receiving it a week and a half later, all I got changed was the fan. The Planar was the same. Granted, the temps are a few degrees lower but the planar is the same which does not solve the two dimm problem. I mentioned the MIGR tip when i sent it in a week and a half ago, now I just called again and reaffirmed that I want my planar changed and provided the tip again. Hopefully this will get sorted out. Lenovo customer service is pretty bad from my experience.

I sent mine in almost a week ago (Wednesday) and I still haven't gotten it back yet :(.

When I asked what the holdup was (on Friday) they said that they're out of the part I need (FRU 44C3931)...and that they would supposedly try emailing some higher-up for special permission to get it ASAP.

I've called them back yesterday and today...they have no further updates as to what's going on with my laptop.  :(

I don't know if everyone's laptops are getting sent to the same place (mine is in Tennessee)...if so it's going to suck if everyone has to deal with them being out of the correct planar...hopefully they get a big shipment of them soon.

lrf,

That part is indeed on back order, but is only a short term situation.

As you imagine, trying to manage the spikes in demand can be challenging...

All,

From my last update on 5/23 where we had completed the investigation and noted all possible affected part numbers and filed engineering changes, we were waiting on stock to be filled for these updated part numbers.

It appears, that in the part substitutions, 44C3931 can replace both 42W7653 and 42W7877 listed in the original tip.   I'm sure this creates some extra demand for that part.  There appear to be 5 other "new" part numbers to address other variants of the T61P systems.  With one exception (due in stock 6/27), these parts seem to be available now, and we will work to get the TIP MIGR 69684  updated.

Updates to follow here as well...

Mark

Mark:

I've had my 42w7653 replaced in Macau. The report sheet said:check machine will auto reboot when play 3d game, replaced m/b problem fixed, also run ram and hdd test, test passed. Here it simply implied that my m/b was replaced, but i can't figure out if the replaced mother board was 44C3931. Anyway, it now runs 3d games perfectly. And i really appreciate the efficience of Lenovo, it just took 3 workday to have my laptop back!!!
