@webtc

I am with you on that one. I am glad I read it before it got removed.

I may not have known that until it was too late. Also since it is stated

in the warranty, what's wrong with it?

Same mod removed part of my message because I was also seeking

other avenues and was simply offering other options to other posters...

He/She stated "it's more productive to be calm and rational"

With all do respect. I am calm, but we are beyond rational here. Instead of

just deleting peoples posts, could you offer up something more "productive"?

All,

The updated tip was submitted for publishing, hopefully it will appear on the web shortly.

There are actually 6 different part number chains that we are addressing in the tip.   A substitution is reflected to the latest version of the board for each chain.  As 42W7877 is on the same line as 42W7653, it is not specifically listed in the tip.

If you have experienced this problem on a system with 42W7653, after performing PD and excluding other variables, service should replace with 44C3391 to resolve this issue.   Once again, this is a tolerance issue and not every system would be affected.

Mark

Almost October soon and Lenovo has either:

- fixed some customers who's planars are listed.

- attempted replacing the planar which may sometimes return with same Original problems or with other separate issues.

- some of the original planar boards 42W7653 posted since October 2007 on here and at thinkpad forums are yet to be listed MIGR

when will Lenovo get their act together with their service depot's??   Quality Control is the pits.

Funny to see that everyone is holding his breath for three day after Mark's post about the tip, while it probally won't be there for a long time, knowing lenovo.

I am starting a yes/no poll

Who thinks the tip will be there within one month?

I do.  Mark Hopkins is sincerely trying to help those of us with T61P mainboard problems but I suspect is running into Lenovo corporate bureuaucracy in getting the tip (MIGR) updated.  The cost to update all of our mainboards to the more current version is not trivial and I'm sure Lenovo is not anxious to do it, but as long as Mark is on it I think it will get done soon.

The problems and extremely slow tech support response by lenovo is not convincing me to switch from sony vaio to a T61p, even though the T61p has more to offer from a specifications perspective at a better price.  The lack of support, and poor quality of support by lenovo does not make me think they stand behind their product (ie, action and not words) and one has to pray they do not need tech support after buying...

Mark is actually the one bright spot in all of this.  Through it all Mark has always been helpful to us.  I'm sure everyone has seen him reach out to those who are having issues with the depot service.  I doubt that is his job function, but it seems he has been actively trying to resolve this issue and I really appreciate it.

If only everyone at Lenovo were as dedicated as Mark... this mess would probably have been addressed long ago.

hawaiidream, I have the same feeling.  Lenovo's laptops are awesome.  I really love the T61 that I bought.  But without the service you just have to hope nothing goes wrong that requires you to send it in.  Like others, if I knew this would happen and I had to do it again I would not have purchased from Lenovo... but then again what company has good depot service eh?  :smileysad:

The new MIGR shows up in the web now. But still,I can't  see 42w7653 in the new list. May I ask why?

Re: T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

All,

I am marking this post as the solution for this thread as it needs to be solved at some point, and I believe we have the part logistics and now the updated tip to provide a definitive resolution for  all customers who experience this particular issue.  I believe many have already been resolved along the way due to the prior actions.

I'll refer back to my original answer on page 48 of this thread wherein I outlined the symptoms, explained that this is caused by a combination of tolerances and does not affect all systems.

The expanded set of part in the updated tip  proactively encompass the various system board progressions in this product line.  There may be other board numbers in circulation due to other, unrelated changes, and to facilitate our service logistics.

One part number variant not listed specifically in the tip is 42W7653.   This board is in the same series as 42W7877 and service should replace it with 44C3931 to resolve these symptoms.

Mark

Edit - updated link back to page 48 which was broken because thread had been moved.  Moves break intra-thread links.

Re: T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

I was thinking of buying the thinkpad t61p or the upcoming w500, but after I saw that Lenovo's technical staff took several months to solve a serious issue with its top of the line model, I am getting second thoughts.

Can you please advise me as to what I should expect if I buy the a t61p in stores now, or what I should expect from the w500?

I was looking at this model and willing to pay this price to have access to a flawless product. If it is not so, I'll have to look closer at the price differences between this ones and other models from more commercial brands.

Thank you
