Re: T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

I can not run CATIA on my new t61p. This ISV machine is broken or bad designed! I can confirm that I can run CATIA with one memory module. Still don't know if the machine will be functional with one core. I'll come back shortly.

Re: T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

Thanks to all for your continued help.   At present, the underlying cause of this issue remains unknown.

Please keep in mind that from reading the threads here, on TPF and NBR, there are variations in the symptoms that manifest from machine to machine, and game to game  - power off, blue screen, graphic artifacts, halted video driver, application hangs, etc.  This makes it very difficult to reproduce, especially as time to fail can vary on a system.

Seemingly, the only common aspect is having a second memory module installed.  While this appears common,
memory type (single vs double stack), configuration (1+1, 1+2, 2+2), or supplier don't  yet seem to correlate.

A system board, processor and memory from a reportedly failing system  has been brought into engineering and is being tested, although the holidays have momentarily paused some of these efforts.

The comparison of serial numbers and build vintages is valuable.   This groups efforts are helpful in defining those variables which are not part of the problem definition.

As always,  service remains available to those that need their systems repaired.

Happy Holidays to all.

Hello Mark

thanks for your reply.

as you mention the only common factor amongst all of the reported issues (freezes, BSOD, power downs, halted video driver, etc) is having two memory modules... what exactly causes the problem is a complete mystery.

with my machine sometimes I can play for an hour before experiencingan issue... and sometimes it can be just few minutes into the game... it doesn't look like overheating related at all, it should be more timely consistent.

I also have TurboMemory but that too is not a common factor.

I have contacted the UK repair center. they are helpful too.. I will be able to send it for repair only after the holiday period.

many thanks,
andrea

I just think it's so strange that only some units have this problem, and even those that do have the problem seem to have a variety of symptoms which can sometimes be easy to reproduce but sometimes more random and hard to produce... Yet those who DO have the problem have a very consistent common factor which is being able to remove 1 stick of RAM to stop the problems from occurring!

So on the one hand, it seems like a nebulous and vague problem, but on the other hand, the 2 sticks vs. 1 thing has been really consistent so far.

I hope the engineers working on this issue are paying close attention to the particular components on the motherboards that have this problem and those that don't have the problem, there MUST be some common difference that makes a motherboard exhibit these problems!

Re: T61P Graphic problems--random shut down, BSOD, Crash

Hi,

I'm new to this forum but I've read through this thread and similar ones at thinkpadforums and notebookreview.  Does anyone have a guess as to how common this graphics/memory problem is?  That is, if it's just a small percent of laptops that have these problems, or if it's more common, say over 20% of laptops shipped in the last month?

It just seems that many people are having this issue, which makes me think it's not just a small percentage.  Of course, I realize that the people who post in these threads are the ones that have problems and that people with good laptops wouldn't post here.  Still, it seems like an alarming number of people with this problem...

I'm ready to buy a new Thinkpad T61P but this issue has made me wait.  It's nice to see that Lenovo has been good with support and that people with replacement motherboards for their laptops from the depot seem to now have working machines.  This makes me think new laptops wouldn't have these problems since hopefully they'd just ship with the good motherboards.

Thanks for your comments,

Andrew

Mark,
FYI, while all the symptoms vary dramatically, they do have two significant things in common.
1) All symptoms mentioned can be caused specifically by "memory corruption", which can manifest itself in many different ways, including BSOD, power events, hangs, graphics problems, etc.

2) All symptoms seem to occur specifically with 2 DIMMS...meaning, when the memory controller is running in dual channel mode. So you'll want to look at the northbridge.

Hopefully this has been escalated past RTP, to the Yamato PE team?

I think it is something related to northbridge, also. I discovered a new thing ... when disabling the Intel's SpeedStep in BIOS everithing becomes normal as the processor will run at about 50%. I am curious to see if this adjustment solve your problem as well. My t61p is running with dual core and 2x1GB double stacked memory. I do suspect a power problem somewhere.

Happy Holidays to all.

Florian, glad to hear your news.

Which bios version are you using?

Thank you.
