T61P Randomly Going to sleep

2008-12-19, 3:39 AM

Over the past few weeks, my T61p is going to sleep without warning while I'm using it.  Has anyone seen this behavior before?

Sometimes it will happen several times in a row

jonseattle,

Do you have the problem only when you're running on battery power?

I have noticed the same behaviour in my T61 and had wondered if the systems was overheating. It has not done this in the last few weeks. Did your T61 stop this as well?

I do think it has to do with overheating.  I've installed some CPU temp monitors and see the CPU in the 90 C range some days....

As long as I have got you online. Have you been able to run System Update 3.14. I get "tvsu.exe has stopped working" no matter what I try.

Re: T61P Randomly Going to sleep

Hate to dredge up an old topic but I have this same issue.

It occured a couple years ago with Vista and somehow through driver updates after running system update it fixed itself.

Now I've reformatted with Win7 and its doing it again.

My T61 goes to sleep whenever the processor is running at 100%, such as during virus scanning or when Picasa is doing face recognition, for instance.  My solution so far has been to just always kill apps before they go 100%, or wake the computer up and kill the app before it goes 100% again.  But this is really annoying.

System Update says everything is up to date.  Does that mean everything I should have installed for my computer is?  I never know what exactly my laptop needs.

Does anyone have a suggestion to fix this?  I've called Tech support several times and they are of no help what so ever.  My Windows 7 Buisness install isn't an offical Lenovo copy so they don't care.

Thank for any suggestion!!!

I had this same problem for two months or so. The last time the laptop went to sleep it never awoke from its slumber. Laptop was sent out to Lenovo for repair; motherboard replaced (NO VIDEO symptom). I suspect your issue is linked, as a number of users are going through the same (allegedly) video card related issue. Extend your warranty right away if youre out of warranty and or upgrade it too!

Re: T61P Randomly Going to sleep

I am having this problem. Whenever the system is under heavy load, particularly running virtual machine loads, the machine goes to sleep, sometimes several times in a row. I see that others speculate that it is heat-related. This laptop does run hot.

I just got a Dell Latitude 13, and loaded VMware Workstation to run the heavy VM load, and this laptop has no problem with the load - no overheating, no random sleeping. It has 2 GB RAM, as opposed to the 4 GB in the T61p. I am running Windows 7 in both. I have been a big fan of the T61P for many years, but I will have to trade this in. The shutdown is preventing me from doing work. Sometime it will happen in the middle of a WebEx. I do lots of remote work, and this interferes with my job.

I really hope this gets monitored and someone has an answer.
