T61p battery replacement - recommendation needed

2014-10-04, 9:19 AM

My 6.5 year old original battery finally died

(battery light blinking and message displays: The battery failed due normal wear. The battery canot be chatged. Replace the battery).

Any recommendation for reasonably priced replacement, 6 or 9 cells?

Hi,

your 15.4" widescreen T61p takes the same battery as T60. Just be sure not to order T61/p 14.1" widescreen battery, which will not fit. If possible, it's always best to get a Genuine Lenovo battery as most after-market (replacement) batteries are of inferior quality and may even pose safety issues or damage your laptop. If searching online auction sites be careful to read listing descriptions carefully to make sure you are getting a genuine product. Many merchants will confuse 14.1" widescreen batteries with 15.4" batteries, or send a non-O.E.M. product although a Genuine product is pictured. It's best to communicate with the merchant to verify the exact product and ask what the exact FRU part # is. Receiving a dead battery and having to go through a claims process is not a pleasant experience.

Thank you for responding. I am cheap (this is why I have my old Lenovo and I love it) and I like to live dangerously, so I went to Ebay and bought a supposedly new 9 cell battery there for whole $21 with warrranty. I will keep you posted, when it arrives later this week.

be careful, it will be no bargain if it overheats and catches fire. Blackmarket batteries are often sold on ebay and can bypass mandatory inspections when shipped direct to the enduser.

I would have recomended a used well tested genuine battery that sell from $20-50

The battery came today and I put it in. T61p accepted it without a hitch and it is charging. Power manager 6 says:

Full charge capacity 68.23 Wh

Current 1.82 A

Voltage 12.28

Wattage 22.32 W

Cycle count: 1

Manufacturer name: Sony

Manufacture date: 2014-04-11

First used date: 2014-04

Serial number 1561

Bar code number 1Z7SS33C121

FRU part number 93P5030

Device chemistry Li-Ion

design capacity 71.28 Wh

Design voltage 10.80 V

Firmware version -

If it is a fake, it is well done, and for $21 I am not complaining (yet) - smile

Actually this info looks suspect to me. The T61p had options for a 6cell with 56.16 Wh and 9cell with 84.24 Wh only. The design capacity of 71.28 Wh is typical of an 8 cell battery and sure enough when I look up that FRU number it comes up as an X60/X61 battery with 8cells which would never fit a T61p. I suspect someone copied the firmware of a genuine X series battery and used it to make this T series. It may work fine, and it may have all the needed safety circuits, but there is no way to know. My guess is you have a copy of a 9cell case with 8 cells and a copy of an x61 battery controller.

Good luck with it, you may not have any problems but I recommend you not leave it unattended with the AC power connected. A lithium battery fire can be very difficult to put out and the least of concern would be your laptop, If one does catch on fire the only thing I could recommend is finding something like a metal trash can or other fireproof container and putting it and anything else the fire spread to in so you can carry it outdoors, but naturally remove any children first. Many people don't take the fire risk serious but there is a good reason why airlines prohibit or restrict carrying these batteries and most countries severely restrict import.

Re: T61p battery replacement - recommendation needed

Thank you so much for yout thoughtfull and logical explanation. I will try to post some pics and more experience with this as time goes. It surely looks like original T61p 9 cell battery and fits perfectly. I will try to weight it as well.  Yesterday I discharged the battery for the fist time, I played some movie and I think it took about 3 hours. They attached one page isntructions and asked me to charge and recharge the battery several time to condition it before it reaches its full capacity. We are here to share our experinces with Lenovo computers and the info should allow others to make correct judgment call about their own future replacements.

If you have any other tests/recommendations about that I should do to check the battery further, please share, so that we can all learn. Thank you very much again for your time and experience.

Now the battery info is giving a bit different story:

Your battery can hold 72% charge of your original capacity.

Re: T61p battery replacement - recommendation needed

All info stays the same, only full charge capacity now tells 51.46W. So it looks this 9 cell battery already lost 3 cells and is not like 6 cell battery. I will contact seller on Ebay and ask about this. They even contacted me and asked me if I am happy with the purchase and if I will be so kind and let them know about any problems before I post negative evaluation on Ebay.

So I will write to them about missing cell(s) and missing capacity and my educated guess is that I will soon get a real full 9 cell battery, because it will be easer for them to shut me up this way and take a bit of a loss.

I will keep you all posted.

This will be fun.
